UNITED: STATES PATENT OFFICE.

WILLIAM JAoKsoN, 0F PLYMOUTH, INDIANA.

OBSTETRICAL APRON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,713, dated May 15, 1894.

Application file September 30. 1892- Sen'al No. 447,437. (No model.)

.'l'o aZZ whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM JAoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Marshalland State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Apron to be Used in Obstetrical and Gynecological Operations, of whichvthe following is a specification.

The present invention relates to obstetrical and surgical appliances, and has for its object the provision of a shield or apron that can be readily attached to and removed from the patient without causing discomfort and which when in use Will afford complete protection to the patient, clothes and bed from the discharges and escaping fluids attending the operation.

To this end said invention consists of the shield or apron constructed as hereinafter specified and claimed.

In the annexed drawings-Figure 1 is a plan View of my apron. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views from opposite sides showing the same arranged for use.

In carrying my invention into practice I take a rectangular piece of Waterproof material, preferably rubber cloth, and close to one end cut or slit the same inward from each side toward the center to form fiaps a, and a. To the upper edge of the fiaps are secured cords or a strap and buckle b, b,twhich are adapted to co-operate while to the lower edge of each flap is attached a cord c that is adapted to co-operate with an eye or hole din the shield just below the slit or cut. The smaller, up-

per part having the fiaps a, a, I term the pelvic part and the lower larger part the apron or shield.

To apply the'device to a patient, the pelvic part is placed across the small of the back and the fiaps a, a, carried up over the sides and united across the pubes by the strap and buckle b, b. The edges or fiap portions of the apron are passed up between the legs and each edge carried outward partially over the adjacent leg and secured in place by the cord c, of the nearest fiap a, being passed through its hole d, and tied. There will thus be formed betweenthe legs a basin or, receptacle Whose bottom is a continuation of the portion of the pelvic part that is at the patientis back so that all discharges, as in confinement, will be entirely caught, protecting both patient and bed. If desired the lower end of the apron can be turned up to prevent any possibility of the contents of the apron passing out at this point.

What I claim is- An apron or shield consisting of a piece of suitable material cut or slit inward from opposite sides to form a pelvic part with fiaps adapted to be secured aorossthe body and a part to form a receptacle whose bottom is a continuation of the pelvic part, by having its edges passed up between the legs, substantially as specified.

WILLIAM J ACKSON.
