SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,260, dated May 1, 189 Application filed May 2 1, 1892. SerialNo. 4345379. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN K. HUNTER, a citizen of theUnited States of America,residing at Owensborough, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slides for Sewing-Machines, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in slides for sewing machines, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be fullydescribed hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a slide for sewing machines, which can be pushed or snapped in position in contra-distinction to sliding the same, and which will not become loose from wear and be moved by the jar of the machine. In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, 1s an inverted perspective view of a slide for rotary shuttle machines which embodies my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view of the same showing itin position. Fig. 3, is an inverted perspective view of a slide for reciprocating shuttle machines. Fig. .4, is a view showing the slide illustrated in Fig. 1,1n operative position. Fig. 5, is a sectional View showing the slide illustrated in Fig. 3, in position.
My invention is especially designed to be used in connection with the Wheeler & Wil
son sewing machines, but-it can be applied to other machines with the same advantageous results. I I A indicates a wide slide, such as is generally used for rotaryshuttle machines. Attached to the under side of this slide is a spring B, preferably U-shaped and extending transverse the said slide- I This spring has its ends bent downwardl yas shown at b.
To place the slide in position insert the inner notched end a, of the slide under the inner end of the slide opening, and then press it downward carrying the ends b, of the spring into engagement with the side walls of the slot, when the slide will snap in position in the slot or opening and be held by the frictional contact of the ends I), with the said side walls of the slide openin The spring is sufficiently strong to hold the slide firmly in position and prevent it from any movement by p & Wilsonmachines, of first removing a block and then forcing the slide endwise, as now required.
In Fig. 3, the narrow slide is used for reciprocating shuttle machines and extends across the bed of the machine, and is provided at its front end with a lip on, which catches under the bed of the machine, and its rear end with a spring 0 where it will be out of the way of the shuttle, and which catches under the throat platefor holding the said slide in position.
While I show both ends of the spring acting as a spring, it will be readily understood that one end may be rigid ora stop substituted therefor; while the other end forms a spring. I prefer to use the double spring however as giving. the best results.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent,
slide-way, substantially as shown and described.
2. A slide for sewing machines having a spring secured to and extending across the under face thereof, the free ends of said spring having holding lips at opposite edges of the slide, substantially as specified.
3. A slide for sewing machines having a U-shaped spring secured to the under side thereof, the free ends of said spring extending to opposite edges of the slide and having depending holding lips, substantially as specified. I
