UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. FAIRBANKS AND JOSEPH B. MCOUNE, OF HARTFORD, CONN, ASSIGNORS TO ELIAS A. WILKINSON, OF NEWARK, N. J.
NEEDLE -CLAMP AN D THREAD-GUIDE FORSEWING-MAClHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,652, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed June 19, 1882. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES M. FAIR.- BANKS and JOSEPH B. MoOoNE, of the city and county of Hartford, and State of Connectiout, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NeedleUlamps and Thread- Gtlldt s for Sewing-Machines, described in this specification and the drawings thereof.
The invention consists in improvements re- '10 lat'ing to the needle-clamp on the needle-bar for controlling the thread.
Figure I is a perspective view of one form of the invention. Fig.2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view thereof.
1 In the form of construction shown the needle-clamp A is held to the needle-bar O by a nut, B. The face of the needle-clamp has a vertical thread-groove, a. The needle-clamp is held from turning by a screw, D, having a smooth point, at, to enter a hole, g, in the needle-bar. This screw also serves to hold the thread guide E in proper relation to the face of the needle-clamp. The thread-guide may be bent to conlorm to the thread-groove, and
made of spring metal. Thethreadis drawn under the end of the thread-gnide into the threadgroove, and then supported by the threadguide, which, when made ofsprin g metal, closes after the thread is in position and holds itin place.
] ing the needle-clamp thereafter, and the consequent oiling of the fingers of the operator and the necessary delay.
The details of construction may be varied 5 within the scope of the improvements. For example, the spring thread-guide may be re versed in position from that shown in. the draw ings, and, instead of a groove,g,in the needleclamp, abend may be madein the spring threadguide.
We claim as our invention 1. The combination, in sewing mechanism, of needle-bar 0, having hole g, needle-clamp A, having groove to and not B, screw D, hav- 5 ing smooth point at, and spring thread-guide E, held to the needle-clamp by the screw 1) alone, the smooth point of which prevents the clamp from turning, substantially'as set forth.
2. The combination, in sewing mechanism, of aneedle-clamp held to a needle-bar by a nut, a spring thread-guide held to the needleclamp wholly by a screw having a smooth point entering a hole in the needle-[bar to prevent the needle-clamp from turning when the nut is loosened to remove or replace a needle, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a needle-clamp,a needle-bar, and a thread-guide, the thread-guide held to the needle-clamp whollyby a screw having a smooth point entering the needle-bar to prevent the clamp from turning when it is loosened, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our signatures, in the presence of two attesting 7 witnesses, on the .3lst day of May, 1882.
