UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
GIOVANNI G. CARBONE, OF GENOA, ITALY.
PAPER BOX FOR MATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,687, dated April 24, 1894.
Application filed November 15, 1893- Serial No. 491,041- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GIOVANNI G. CARBONE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Genoa, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes for Matches and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The subject matter of the present invention is a box for matches and for other analogous objects.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1, shows the piece of paste board and the dotted lines along which it must be bent for forming the box. Fig. 2, shows the closing piece or the sliding cover. Fig. 3, is the piece of pasteboard that is cutout of the piece shown in Fig. 1 for forming the opening of the box. Fig. 4:, is a side View of the box. Fig. 5, is a plan View of the same when closed, and Fig. 6, is a plan View thereof when open. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the box of Figs. 1 to 6. Figs. 7 to 12 show also and in the same order as Figs. 1 to 6 do, the parts and views of a modified box.
Referring to Figs. lto 6 the general form of the box is a rectangular parallelipipedon; yet it will be understood that said box can be made of any convenient form without departing from the principle of the invention.
The box is made of two pieces A B. A, after being folded along the dotted lines a, a, constitutes the envelope of the box. It has an opening I) for the introduction or keeping in good order of the objects contained in the box, and two cuts 0, c. B is the sliding cover, the edges (1, cl, are bent at a right angle and slide between the borders f and g that form the sides of the box; while the ears mm pass through the cuts a, c and must serve as holds for the fingers for sliding the cover in order to open or close the box. The piece 19 shown in Fig. 3, is merely the piece of material cut out of the piece A for making the opening of the box; sometimes said piece I) is pasted upon the interior surface of the cover B for strengthening the same.
In order that the box shall keep its shape after the piece A has been folded it will be sufficient to put glue upon the wall K which is the side upon which the sand is put forthe friction necessary for lighting the matches.
The modification of the box shown by Figs. 7 to 12 instead of being provided with the ears m m the cover B is provided with a small tongue of linen or other material for sliding the same.
The box that constitutes the subject matter of the present invention presents great advantages above those now in use. In fact, besides being cheaper to manufacture it is of a smaller size although containing the same quantity of matches; it is easy to keep without impairing its shape; less motions are needed for Working the same and the contents are more secure as the box cannot be opened except by the voluntary displacing of the cover.
I claim- A box for matches, and the like consisting of a single blank A having a side opening b, and having edgesf, g, bent up contiguous to each other and forming the sides of the box, the sliding cover arranged to move across the opening in the box and having right angular edges d, d, fitting between the edges f, g, of the box and the finger piece or projection on the cover for sliding the same, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have signed thisspecification in presence of two witnesses.
