SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,610, dated Apri1i24, 1894.

Be it known that I, MORITZ KRAGEN, merchant, of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bangs, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable bungs, and it consists of certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several Views.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of one form of my improved bung. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation on the same when the parts are assembled, and have not been screwed firmly together. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the bung after the parts have been expanded, as would be the case when the bung is fitted in the barrel. Fig. 4 represents a central longitudinal section of the form of bung shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Fig. 5 represents an inverted plan view of another form of bung, manufactured according to my invention. Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of the same before the parts are screwed firmly together. Fig. 7 represents a plan View of a third formof bung manufactured according to my invention. Fig. 8 represents a side elevation of the said bung before the parts are screwed firmly together. Fig. 9 represents a side elevation of the bung shown i in Fig. 8 as expanded.
a represents ametallic casin g chambered out to receive the nut h, which rests on the lower part a of the said casing, and is held in place by the cap b which is rigidly attached to the said casing a. The cap b is cut away atits center to allow a Spanner to be used in the holes h' and h2 of the nut h, and is provided with ears b3 and b4 adapted to be nailed to the barrel or other receptacle, at either side of the bung hole. The casing a is perforated at 01.2 to admit the passage of the screw c, which is threaded at both ends, as shown at Fig. 4. This screw is squared, and the aperture a2 is also made square, so that the said screw will not turn with the nut h when the latter is turned. Rubber disks d and d', and washers e and f are slipped on over the bottom of the screwmc, and all the parts are held together by the nut g as shown `in Fig. 4. It will be obvious that if the nut h be screwed down, on the enlarged screw head c0 the distance between the washer f and the base a of the casing a, will be diminished, and that the rubber disks d and d will be caused to bulge outward, as shown in Fig 3. In this way the bung may be adjusted finally in the bunghole, any desired degree of compression being obtained by simply screwing down on the nut h.
In the form of bung shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the casing a is provided at the top with a flange b o having downward projecting pins t, and ribs z" adapted to be driven into the wood around the bung hole. In this form of device, but one rubber disk d and one washer f are, used, the said rubber disk being compressed as described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4.
In the form of device shown in Figs. 7 to 9, the lower plate f performs the double function of nut and washer,`and the screw c is right handed at one end and4 left handed at the other end, and the compression of the rubber disk d is obtained by simply screwing down on the screw c, causing the nut a4 to approach the nut f and thus compress the rubber disk d.

In a bung, the combination of a rectangular pin screw-threaded at both ends, ashell having a rectangular opening to fit upon said pin, a perforated nut within the said shell to screw upon the end of the pin, a perforated ange upon the said shell to retain the nut therein and also to retain the bung in the hole, points 1I and ribs 1I upon said flange to enter the sides ofthe barrel and prevent the rotation of the shell, a nut g upon the inner end of the pin, a disk f retained by said nut, and elastic disks upon the said pin between the disk f and the shell, substantially as and for the purposes described.
