UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 FRED H.RUNDELL, on HoRsEHEADs, NEW YORK.
cHoPPING-KNIFE.
SPEGFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No: 518,279, dated April 17, 1894.
Application file July 28, 1893.
' obtained by knives having multiple blades,
and that the best results are obtained by constructing the blades so as to meet or cross each other at a point removed from the center, or in other words to avoid having the blades meet at a common center so as to pre- .vent clogging, andv to that end my invention consists in'the several new and novel features of construction hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims thereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical elevation of a knife complete. Fig. 2. is a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3. is a view of the main blade detached. Fig. 4. is aview of one of the auxiliary blades detached. Fig. 5. is a view of a slotted plate inclosing the upper ends of the blades. Fig. 6. is aview of a bolt or screw by which the assembled blades are held to the handle. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
bA. is the main blade constructed substantially as shown preferably having its cutting edge convex and provided with substantially vertical slot Ways -ain its lower edge, and provided with a recess ---bat its upper end, the lower end of said slot way being'enlarged as shown at -c,-4- creating shoulders -vdand havingthe upwardly extendin g part --e-.
B. are auxiliary blades constructed substantially similar to the blade -A- except that there are no slot Ways -aand is provided with a slot way --f-- openin g from the recess -bas shown in Fig. 4. The blade fl-B- is then preferably bent, centrally, as
Serial No. 481,710. (No model.)
through the slot way ---f-- in the blade --B- the slot-way -Ha-ik passing overthe lower portion Lgof the blade -f-B-- directly below the slot-way -f-- until their lower faces are in substantially the same plain, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will not be necessary to describe the other auxiliary blade as they are both screwed upon the main blade -A- in the same way.
O. is a disk or centrally perforated washer as shown in Fig. 5, having radial slot-Ways hand adapted to fit over the upwardly extending portions -eof the blades -A and B.
D. is a threaded bolt or screw, having one end enlarged as shown at -z' E. is the handle preferably -of the form shown in Fig. 1 although it may be of any other form desired, having a threaded central Opening jand its lower face recessed (not shown) so as to allow the base-of the handle to fit down over the extended portions -eand rest upon the upper end of the blades.
When vthe blades have been assembled as above described, the bolt or screw --D-- is then inserted vertically in the recess --bthe head --z'- passing into the enlarged portion --cthereby allowing the head of the bolt to engage with the shoulder --oZ- in the blades. The d-isk v -Cnis then placed over the top of the blades so that the parts fie-h will pass into the slot-Ways --h-; the handle --E-is then. screwed on or otherwise secured to the upper end of the bolt -D- when the knife is ready for use.
What I claim is- 1. A chopping knife comprising a main blade having two substantially vertical slot- Ways in its lower edge, a slot-way in its upper end having its lower end enlargedauxiliary blades having a similar slot-wayin its upper end, and a vertical slot-Way leading therefrom through the center of the blade and adapted to engage with the. aforesaid IOO slot-Ways, a handle and a bolt engaging with said enlarged slot-Ways having its Upper end Secured to the handle.
2. A chopping knife comprising a main blade having slot-Ways in its lower end, a slot-way in its upper end, having its lower end enlarged, auxiliary blade having a similar slot-way leading therefrom through the center of the blade, said blades having the io upward extending part -ea radially slotted perforated disk engaging said parts, a handle and a bolt engaging with said enlarged slot- Ways, and said disk, and Secured to the handle as set forth.
In witness Whereof I have hereunto set my 15 hand on this 18th day of July, 1893.
