No. 496,809.. Patented'May 2, 1893.
ATTORN EYS.
UNrrE STATES ATENT nron.
J. \V. ALLEN, OF RICHFORD, NEW YORK.
'CHOPPING-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,809, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed September 12, 1892. $erial No. 445,611. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. W. ALLEN, of Richford, in the county of Tioga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Chopping-Knives, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to chopping knives,
and my special object is to produce a multiple radial bladed-chopping knife which shall be self cleaning. I have found by practice that a multiple bladed chopping knife, in which the blades are radially mounted in a head, and in which the cutting edges are continuous and unbroken, or extend in an unbroken line from the outer corner of each blade to the line of the inner edge thereof, is inoperative because of the clogging of the material in the angles between the cutting edges and the sides of the blades; and to avoid this trouble, I cut away the inner lower corners of the inner edges of the blades, so that, when secured in the head, a central recess is created below the head, and the inner or meeting ends of the cutting edges are raised and either in a straight or curved line, rise toward the head from the main cutting edges, thereby creating a central recess which will prevent the material from clogging between the vertical faces of the knives.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which--- Figure 1, is a side elevation of the chopping knife. Fig. 2,is a transverse section on line 00 0c, in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an elevation of one of the blades, detached, showing the head in dotted lines. Figs. 4 and 5, are views of the blades constructed double, having a cen:
tral recess in their cutting edges and provided with slotways to adapt them to be secured together at an angle to each other.
A, is the shank upon which the handle B is secured, and provided upon its lower end with a head 1, shown as cone-shaped (but I do not limit myself to that form), in
which the inner edges -'3 of the blades *2 are secured, as by being cast into it, or in any other desirable Way. The blades may be constructed double, with a central recess in their cutting edge and provided with a vertical slotway, or other means, by which they may be secured together at an angle to each other, the lower cutting edges being substantially in the same plane. A handle of any design may then be secured at the top in any ordinary manner. The lowerinner corners of the blades are cut away either angularly, as shown at 5, or curved and sharpened to create auxiliary cutting edges in extension of the main cutting edges 4-, and the edges 5- rising toward the head create a recess below the' head in which the edges do less cutting than the main edges, and also prevent so much less surface to whichthe material can adhere, that all clogging of material in the center of the knife is avoided, the head being also so much farther removed vertically above the plane of the main cutting edges.
In the drawings I show an odd number of blades, so that no two are in transverse alignment, as this is of especial advantage in sharpening the inner cutting edges with a file,
because it cannot strike upon the cutting edge of another blade.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A blade for a multiple bladed chopping knife having a vertical inner edge, a main cutting edge and an auxiliary cutting edge formed by cutting away the lower inner cornor of said main cutting edge substantially as shown.
2. A multiple bladed chopping knife comprising ashank, ahead thereon, and multiple blades having their vertical inner edges secured therein, and having their lower inner corners cut away and sharpened, and having cutting edges along their lower edges exterior 1130 the cut away portion, in combination as set orth.
The combination with the head of the blades having their vertical inner edges secured therein, and having their lower inner corners cut away to create a recess below the head, and having theirloweredgessharpened, edge, a lower cutting edge and having its as set forth. lower inner corners cut away, as set forth. 1c
4:- A blade for a multiple blade chopping In witness whereof I have hereunto set my knife, provided with substantially vertical hand this 30th day of August, 1892.

ting edges, as set forth. In presence of 5. A blade for a multiple blade chopping C. W. SMITH, knife, havingan inner, substantially vertical, HOWARD P. DENISON.
