GAZETTE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,420, dated April 3, 1894.
Application tiled October 6, 1893. Serial No. 487,384. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDOUARD ADAM, merchant,a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Lucerne, in the canton of Lucerne, Republic ofSWitzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improved means for holding newspapers and like articles. It is designed to be readily opened and closed when desired and to be hung upon the wall out of the way when not in use, or it may be used in its suspended position.
In the drawings:-Figure l, isa view of the holder opened. Fig. 2, is a sectional View of the holder partly open. Fig. 3, is a sectional View of the holder closed. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are cross sections of the holder closed, partly closed and open.
The holder consists of the rails BB2 hinged at e, having embedded in their faces the casings b b. The rod A passing through the openings of the casings and hinging the rails B B2 together isprovided with one or more wedge shaped projections a., only one of which is shown and this is inclosed in the pocket (Z of the casing b Fig. 2. The pockets are out of alignment when the holder is open as shown in Fig. l, the wedge being inclosed in the lower pocket d. To close the holder and clamp the newspapers the rails are pressed together so that the pocket ofthe upper casing b will come slightly over the wedge point and then the rod A is pulled longitudinally in the direction of the arrow x. This forces the Wedge against the side Wall of the pocket CZ and draws it into alignment with the pocket CZ or as nearly so as the papers inclosed between the rods B B2 will admit of and the friction of the wedge will hold the rails in this position to clamp the newspapers. Apin A2 may be fastened in one rail of the holder fitting a corresponding depression in the 0pposite rail. This pin penetrates the papers and helps to hold them in place. The holder when closed may be hung in any convenient place by the hook A formed on the end of the rod A.

A holder for papers adapted to be operated by the longitudinal movement of the rod A, having a wedge shaped projection thereon, said wedge bearing upon the sides of pockets formed in casings embedded in the rails of the holder, said casings in combination with the rod serving to hinge the rails ofthe holder together, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the binding rails of a paper holder, the casings embedded therein, having pockets and a rod havingawedge shaped projection thereon, adapted to said pockets, said rod having longitudinal movement through the casings, substantially as described.
