Description

UNITED STATES PATENT. CFFICE.
EDWARD G. DELOE, OF KNOX, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-Pl PE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,332, dated March 27, 1894. ppli i n fi January 13, 1892. Renewed September251 1893. Serial No. 486,482. (Model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. DELoE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Knox, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificaion. 1
My invention relates to tobacco pipes, the object being to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby the smoke from the bowl is caused to take a circuitous route through passages formed in the wall of the pipe before being drawn into the stem, whereby the advantages of a long stem are secured, while the pipe itself may be but a short distance from the mouth.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional View of a pipe bowl constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, one of the annular rings being removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1, designates a pipe bowl of any suitable material, having circumferential screw threaded grooves 2, at the top and bottom to receive the annular rings 3, which are correspondingly threaded.
The numeral 4:, denotes a series of vertical smoke passages formed in the wall of the bowl, alternately connected together at top and bottom by means of the horizontal passages 5, whereby one continuous passage is formed. One of these vertical passages adjoining the boss 6, which receives the pipe stem is connected with the interior of the bowl. by means of a passage 7 communicating with a central recess 9, in the bottom of the bowl, while the passage adjoining the boss on the opposite side is connected with the boss by means of a passage 8.
The operation is as follows: When the annular rings are secured in place, a continuous passage will be formed, the smoke from the bowl passing through the passage 7, to the vertical passage upon one side of the boss. It then ascends said passage till it reaches the top, when it will pass through'the horizontal passage 5, to the vertical passage, through which it will descend till it reaches the bottom thereof, when by the lower horizontal passage it will pass to the next vertical passage and so on till the last passage is reached, when it will enter the boss through the passage 8, and from thence be drawn into the stem.
The advantages of my invention will be apsages, a passage connecting said passages with the central recess, a boss having a recess for the reception of a stem, a passage connecting said recess with the vertical and horizontal passages and the annular disks fitting in the grooves at the top and bottom of the bowl, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD G. DELOE. Witnesses:
