TOBACCO PIPE.
Application 51m "Februar 1a, 1924. 8er1al1io.688,756.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, ARMAND Sm'rn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco ipes and it has as one of its ob'ects the provlsion of means for cooling the W1 and the stem of a pi Anot er object of this invention is the provision of a pipe which smoke than the pipes hereto ore employed.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a. pipe, the bowl and the stem of which may be cooled by a draft created by the construction of the pipe.
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may su uently appear, my invention consists in t e construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fi ure 1 is a plan view of a pipe embodymg my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and I Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in central vertical section, of a [pipe embodying a modification of my invention. I
Referring .to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, and particular; ly to Fi 1 and 2, the numeral 5 indicates a bowl i aving an aperture 6 formed centrally in its bottom 5. The bowl 5 is provided with a lateral aperture 7 to the periphcry of which is secured a stem portion 8 extending at right angles to the bowl 5 and provided at its outer end with female threads 9. The stem portion 8 is also provided with an aperture 8. Concentrically positioned within the bowl 5 is a bowl 10 adapted to burn tobacco. The upper edge of the bowl 10 is flush with the upper edge of the bowl 5. The bowl 10 being of smaller diameter and less depth than the bowl 5, a space 11 is formed between the walls of the bowls 5 and 10. The bowl 10 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as being held in position by spacin members 12 secured to upper portions 0 the bowls 5 and 10. The bowls 5 and 10 may be regarded as constituting a single double-walled bowl. The bowl 10 is provided near its bottom with an outives a cooler wardly tapering aperture 14 positioned opposite the aperture in the stem portion 8. Threadedly engaging the stem rtion 8 s a stem ortion 15, which at its lnner end is taper to 'fit the tapered aperture 14 m the bowl 10. A space 16 is thus formed between a portion of the stem 15 and a portion of the stem 8. An end stem rtion 18 has a male element 19 which ts into a recess 20 formed in the end of the stem 15. The stem portion 18 is thus removable from the stem 15.
When .the pipe is lit, a draft is created which passes through the aperture 6, upwardly through the space 11 and laterally through the space 16 from which it passes through the aperture 8*. pipe and a portion of the stem are thus cooled by the draft, and a cooler smoke is provided for the smoker.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the parts of the pipe are similarly constructed except that the bowl 10 has a threaded'shank 10 formed on its bottom, and this shank engages a threaded recess 5 formed in the bottom of the bowl 5. The shank 10 is provided with transverse apertures 10 which communicates with the space 11 between the bowls 5 and 10. The shank 10 is also provided with a vertical aperture 10, which communicates with the aperture 6'in the bottom of the bowl 5, and also communicates with the apertures 10 While I have herein described one form of my invention, modifications thereof may be devised without departing from the spirlt thereof, and it is to be understood that such modifications come within the scope of this invention.
What is claimed is:
a 1. A tobacco pipe comprising in combination an outer bowl, an inner bowl situated therein and having an annular. space from the bottom to the .top of the inner bowl, a stem connected to the outer bowl, a stem connected t6 the inner bowl spaced therefrom, and an aperture leading air into-the The bowl of the spaces between the bowls and the stems.
3. A tobacco pipe comprising an inner and an outer bowl having an annular space extending from the bottom of the inner bowl to the top of both bowls, stems connected to each bowl with a space therebetween, an aperture through the stem of the outer bowl, an air inlet opening through the base of the outer bow] into the spaces between the bowls and the stems.
4. A tobacco pipe comprising in combination an outer bowl having a threaded recess in' its base, an inner bowl having a shank screw threaded into the recess, said bowls being spaced from each other from the base to the top, an aperture through the base of the outer bowl and the shank of the inner bowl, stems connected to each bowl with a space the-rebetween, and an air outlet through the stem of the outer bowl. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
