ADJUSTABLE PICTURE-HANGER.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,'MORRIS SCHWARTZ, a sub ect of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, res1ding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brackets for Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dev1ces for hanging picture and analogous frames; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as W1ll be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The objects of my invention are first, to provide a simple and inexpensive means or device for suspending picture-frames on the wall of a room; second, such a device whereby the picture may be raised or lowered to any desired point, and third, a bracket which may be easily adjusted to frames of various sizes, and in such a manner as to incline them from the Wall at any desired angle.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe t, referring to the accompanying drawings, 1n which- Figure 1, is a rear perspective view of a plcture-frame, with my adjustable bracket secured thereto. Fig. 2, is a side view of a portion of the frameand a part of the bracket or hanger. Fig. 3, is a rear View thereof. Fig. 4, is a front perspective view of a picture-frame, showing it suspended to a piece of molding and illustrating a modification in the fixture for the hanger. Fig. 5, is a rear View thereof. Fig. 6, is a side or edge view of the same. Fig. 7, is a detail perspective View of the vertically adjusting clamp, anda portion of the hanging rod. Fig. 8, is adeta1l perspective view of one of the side brackets or fixtures used in said modification. Fig. 9, 1s a View of a portion of the hanger or suspending rod, showing a modification therein. Fig. 10, is a perspective view of an adjusting yoke or piece employed with said modification, and Fig. 11, is aperspective view of still another modification in one of the side brackets or fixtures.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
A, represents a picture-frame of ordinary size, form, and material, to the rear surface of the sides of which are secured by means of screw-eyes a, fixtures B, which are made of any suitable size, and material, and preferably of the form illustrated in Fig. 2, in which the casting or fixture B, is provided with a number of holes or openings 1), for the reception and retention of the adjustable arms or rods 0, which are bent at their free ends, so as to form a hook c, to engage in the holes of the fixtures B, and with a shoulder c, to rest against the sides of the fixtures, thus retaining the fixtures in alignment with the sides of the frame. The upper ends of the rods C, are formed with hooks 0 which engage with suitable eyes or openings (1-, in the arms D, of the adjusting clamp D, which as is clearly shown in Fig. '7, is made of a tubular piece, through which the hanger or suspending rod E, passes, and has extending at right angles therewith on each side of said rod,an arm D, which as before stated is formed with an eye (1, for engagement with the hooks 0 on the rods 0. The sleeve or tubular piece of the adjusting clamp is also provided with a set or thumb-screw d, for engagement with the hanger or suspending rod E, the upper portion of which rod is suitably bent to hook over and engage with the molding A, with which the walls of rooms are usually supplied. As illustrated in Figs. 1, to 3, inclusive of the drawings, the screw-eyes a, are hooked into the lower opening of the fixtures B, and are screwed into the rear surface of the sides of the frame somewhat below the middle thereof, which will hinge the fixtures thereto, as is apparent.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6,1 have shown a modification in the form of the fixtures for the sides of the frames, which modification I may sometimes employ, instead of that illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and which consists of the piece or casting B, having on its outer edge an upturned flange b', provided with a number of holes 19 for engagement with hooks e, on the lower ends of the rods, which when used with this modification, are formed at each end with hooks or loops 0 similar to those employed on the upper ends of said rods, in the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, but which are united at their lower ends to the fixtures B, by means of separate hooks e, which form an elbow or joint at their lower portion, which is necessary for the reason that the fixtures B, are rigidly secured to the sides of the frame, by means of screws passed through the opening 11 in the plate of said fixtures. To prevent these fixtures turning on the screw-fastening, and to dispense with the use of more than one screw, I form the lower surface of the plate of the fixture B, near each end thereof with pins or projections 6 which may be embedded in the sides of the frame. In this modifioation the adjustable clamp D, which has before been described, may be employed.
In Figs. 9, and 10, I have shown a modification for adjusting the frame vertically, and it consists in employing the hanger or suspending rod E, which is formed at its upper end with a hook c, for engagement with the molding or other suitable fastening on the wall, and is bent in its lower part, so as to form a number of hooks or rests F, for engagement with the adjusting yoke G, which as is shown in Fig. 10, is made of a piece of wire, or other suitable material, which is formed with a curve or bow at its middle, and with an eye It, at each end for engagement with the rods 0. It is obvious that I may employ this modification, in either or both of the constructions illustrated in Figs. 1, to 3, inclusive, and Figs. 4, to 6, inclusive.
The operation of my device is simple and as follows: When the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, is used, the height of the picture on the wall may be adjusted by sliding the clamp D, up or down on the suspending rod E, and there securing the same by means of the setscrew, and its inclination or angle may be regulated by hooking the free ends of the rods 0, into the upper or lower holes Z), of the fixtures B, as a greater or less angle may be desired. It will be observed thatin this construction, the shoulders c, in the rods 0, will prevent the fixtures swinging inwardly or toward the center of the frame, and that the screw-eyes, which secure the fixtures to the sides of the frame will form a hinge upon which the frame will act.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4, to 6, inclusive, and Fig. 8, the same operation for adjusting the frame is observed, and by reason of the fact that the fixtures B, are rigidly secured to the sides of the frame, it becomes necessary to form the rods 0, at their lower portion with a joint, which is done by means of the hooks 6, one end of which engages with the rods, and the other with the openings in the fixtures.
As before stated, the modification, in the method of vertically adjusting the frame illustrated in Figs. 9, and 10, may be employed in either of the above described constructions, by simply moving the yoke G, from one of the hooks F, on the suspending rod E, to the other.
In Fig. 11, is shown still another modification in the form of the side brackets or fixtures, which I sometimes prefer to use, and which consists of a plate B having a flange b supported at each end by standards I). As shown the flange is provided with a number of broken rings N, with a space 11 between them and the plate B to allow of the easy insertion of the bent end of the rod 0, which will engage with either of said rings, as may be desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an adjustable bracket for picture frames, the combination of the hanger or sus pending rod E, with the adjusting clamp D, having the arms D, provided with holes (I, and set-screw (l, the arms or rods C, loosely secured to the arms D, of the adjusting bracket, and having at their free ends the hooks c, to engage fixtures secured to the sides of the frame, and said fixtures having a series of openings one above the other to engage the hooks c, and thereby adapted to regulate the angle of the framc,substantially as described.
2. I11 an adjustable bracket for pictureframes, the combination of a hanger or suspender with a device for engagement therewith for vertically adjusting the frame, the arms (3, loosely secured to said device for regulating the angle of the frame, and the fixtures B, pivotally attached to the sides of the frame, at their lower ends, for engagement with said arms, substantially as described.
3. In an adjustable bracket for pictureframes, the combination of a hanger or suspender with a device for engagement therewith for vertically adjusting the frame, the arms C, loosely secured to said device for regulating the angle of the frame, and having the hooks c, and shoulders c, at their lower ends, for engagement with the fixtures B, and said fixtures having the holes I), and hinged to the sides of the frame, substantially as described.
4. In an adjustable bracket for pictureframes, the combination of the hanger or suspending rod E, with the adjusting clamp D, having the arms D, provided with holes d, and the set-screw d, the arms or rods C, loosely secured to the arms D, of the adj nsting bracket, and having at their free ends the hooks c, and shoulders c, to engage the fixtures B, said fixtures having the openings 1), and screw-eyes a, and thereby hinged to the sides of the frame, substantially as described.
