BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,488, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed April 24,1893. Serial No. 471,590- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES HUGH, of Hoboken, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bottle stopper of the kind which is forced into the mouth of a bottle by a bail.
The object of the invention is to so construct the stopper that during manufacture, the bail may be readily slipped through it, and that during use, the stopper may be drawn tightly into the bottle neck by the bail.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of my improved bottle stopper without the bail. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the stopper with the bail.
My improved stopper a is preferably made of porcelain and its head is perforated for the reception of the bail b. This perforation a is of peculiar form being made in the form of a curve which is lowermost at the center (Fig.
2) and has the flaring or enlarged ends a that is to say, a longitudinal section through the perforation will show the same to curve downward from the two outer ends a toward the center of the stopper, where the lowermost point of the perforation is reached. If during manufacture, the bail is to be slipped into the perforation, it is inserted with the shanks upward and is then revolved into the position shown in Fig. 2. The curved form and flaring ends of the perforation permit the ready introduction of the bail and especially the passage of its corner through the same. When the bottle is closed, the bail will bear upon two shoulders a near the ends of the curved perforation a, and will thus evenly force the stopper into the neck of the bottle'A. I
The body of the stopper a, is provided with a lower groove or neck a and an upper groove or neck a, for the reception of the two flanged ends d, 01 of a rubber packing d, which surrounds the side of the stopper. Beneath the lower flange cl, the stopper a, is provided with a head or disk a, extending across the neck'and effectively preventing contact between the contents of the bottle and such flange.
What I claim is- A bottle stopper provided with a downwardly curved perforation 01., having enlarged ends a and provided with bail-supporting shoulders a within such enlarged ends, substantially as specified.
