.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GENDER ZENDER, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Berlin, Prussia, Germany, have invented certain Improvements in Shawl-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in shawl straps and similar devices and has for its object to provide a device of this character of a simple-and inexpensive and durable construction which shall present certain features of superiority over other similar devices heretofore in use all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be the better understood I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a partial perspective View of the shawl strap constructed according to my invention and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of one end thereof with the strap omitted. Figs. 3 and 4' are detail views to be referred to more particularlyhereinafter. Figs. 5 and 6 are views illustrating a slightly modified form of the device.

Referring primarily to Figs. 1 to 4, H is a handle, herein shown tubular and provided with depending hollow ends h, h, on the lower extremities of which are mounted the retainers or strap holding devices A, A. These retainers A consist each of a box having an open top fitted with a hinged cover plate or lid B, the ends of the box being provided with aligned apertures or recesses a, a, as seen in Fig. 2, serving to receive the straps D, D. The retainers A are each further provided at one end with an extension A having two perforations a a through which is passed one end of the strap D which is then secured to form a closed loop or. eye as clearly seen on the drawings. 4

Arranged in the box-like retainer A is a stout leaf spring 0, set at an acute angle with the cover B, and adapted to bear against the under side of the strap D, when inserted through recesses a, with considerable pressure whereby when the lid or coverB is closed over the strap the same may be moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, to tighten it, but is incapable of motion in the opposite direction as will be readily perceived.

In order to secure the lids B and hold the same closed each of said lids is provided with a tongue or finger b which when the lid. is closed projects through a slotted openingh in each end of handle H, and takes under a corresponding projection f, formed on a pivoted lever F, located longitudinally in said hollow end portion h of the handle, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

In order to free the lids B, I have provided the opposite ends of the body of handle H with push buttons or thumb pieces E, E, connected to levers F, and adapted when pushed in to disengage the proj ections f from tongues 19 whereby the lids B will be thrown open as seen at the right in Fig. 1.

In the second form of my invention seen in Figs. 5 and 6, the construction of the retainers A is substantially similar to that just described, with the exception that the spring C is serrated along its upper edge and is of equal width with the interior space of the said retainer.

In lieu of providing the vertical pivoted levers F, however, I have here shown the handle H bent and swiveled at its ends to a hollow cross rod G, wherein are mounted two slides F F provided with upturned perforated ends K, K, passing through slotted openings in rod G, and adapted to receive the tongues 12 of lids B. In order to hold these slides in proper position I have provided each with a retracting spring 0, adapted to hear at one end against a stop arranged in the cross rod G and at the other end against some part of the slide F whereby said slide is kept pressed out toward the end of the cross rod.

In order to simplify the manipulation of the device I have pivoted at the center of the cross rod a spindle N, having opposite arms M, passing through slots in the slides F and also in the cross rod G. By this construction a turn of the spindle as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5, retracts both the slides and frees both lids.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of the device as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that many alterations may be made therein without material departure from the principles of my invention, nor do I limit myself to the-employment of two of the retainers A as it is evident that a greater or less number might in some cases be used.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- 1. In a shawl strap, or the like, the combination with a tubular slotted handle of a retaining box mounted thereon and provided with a hinged cover and opposite perforations, a strap adapted to pass through said perforations,'a spring arranged in said box and adapted to bear under said strap, a lever arranged in said tubular handle and having a projection extending through the slot therein and adapted to bear on the said hinged cover, substantially as set forth.

2. In a shawl strap or the like, the combination with a tubular handle having its opposite ends slotted, of retaining boxes mounted on opposite ends of said handle and each GENDER ZENDER.
