A. B. BUEHL. ADJUSTABLE DRAPING FORM.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR B. BUEHL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE DRAPlNG-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,151, dated March 6, 1894.
Applicationfiled May 1,1893. Serial No. 472,515- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. BUEHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Draping- Forms, of which the following is a specification.
Myinventionrelates to acertain newand improved device adapted to be used in place of the ordinary draping forms, upon which dress goods are displayed in show windows.
The object of the improvement is to produce a draping form which may be quickly and easily adjusted to any width of cloth, or to any requirement as to vertical space which the dimensions of the show-window may in pose.
The device, in which I have embodied my improvement, is shown in the drawings by means of four figures, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of said device when adjusted to its shortest length. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line 22, of Fig. 1, and looking downward. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device extended to its greatest length; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section in lines 4-4, of Figs. 1 and 2.
Said device, which shows the preferred form, in which I have constructed my inventio... sists of a base, A, which may be of an;- 1.1. c forms commonly used in draping forms as ordinarily constructed, a top, B, preferably of similar shape, and usually smaller than the base, and a series of connecting rods, or sticks, O, O, 0 C C C The number of these rods is not material, their purpose being to space the top and base apart, and to furnish whatever intermediate support may be thought necessary for the goods to be draped over the form. The connecting rods are each made of two parts, 0, 0', one of which is secured to the base, and the other of which is secured to the top piece. These rods overlap each other and are each provided at their free ends with bands, c c encircling the other overlapping rod. Both the upper and lower members of the outer connecting rods are flexibly united to the top and bottom pieces, respectively, so that they may yield slightly in or out as the form is adjusted vertically. Thus, as the top piece is drawnfrom the position shown in Fig. 1, to that shown in Fig. 3, the upper ends of the lower members will spread apart slightly, and the lower ends of the upper members will be drawn together, so that the connecting rods or sticks, each made up of the two members, will still be substantially straight between the top and bottom pieces.
One of the connecting rods, 0, which I prefer to locate centrally, is provided with a rack, 0 upon one member, and a spring pawl, 0 upon the other, provided with an eye, 0 adapted to the insertion of a finger to withdraw the pawl from the rack. This spring pawl normally engages with the rack, 0 and the teeth of the latter are shaped to permit of an upward movement, but not of a downward movement. In extending the form, the top and bottom are merely pulled apart and the pawl slides over the inclined sides of the rack teeth. In shortening the form, the pawl is pulled outward by means of the eye, 0 and the top is allowed to drop the required distance.
I recognize the fact that great variation may be possible in the form of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself except as clearly pointed out in the appended claim.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the base, A, and top piece, B, of the connecting pieces, 0, 0, O O O 0 one of which is centrally arranged and provided with a clamping device, and the others of which are arranged about the margins of the base and top piece, respectively, all of said pieces being composed of two overlapping members, one of which is secured to the top piece and the other to the base, and each of which is provided at its free end with a band encircling the other member; substantially as described.
ARTHUR B. BUEHL.
