MOUTH-HARMONICA.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,096, dated March 6, 1894. Application led November 10, 1893. Serial No. 490.598. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GUSTAV KAISER, nierchant, of Trossinger, German y, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mouth-Harmonicas, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide a covering for mouth-harmonicas, so formed, that the same will serve also as a casing adapted to be closed, and from which the instrument will automatically emerge in a definite position, as soon as the coverings which are hinged together on one longitudinal side are opened at the other side. Thelocking of the casing is effected by providingthe harmonica with two studs or pins, secured to the base-piece, which are guided in slots in the side-walls of the covering, by which studs the harmonica is pushed bach, thereby allowing the coverings to be automatically closed.

In the drawings- Figure l represents a plan of a mouth-harmonica embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an end elevation, and Fig. 3 a front elevation of the same, the covering being closed; Fig. 4 a similar view, the covering being open; Fig. 5 a sectional plan, and Fig. 6 a transverse section ot the same, on line Z-Z, Fig. 5.

A is the base-piece, upon which thev reedplates, B, are secured in the usual manner. The covering iiaps or sections, C, C', are distinguished from those coverings hitherto ernployed in not being attached to the reedplates or the base-piece, but being extended at their rear portions and hinged together at the end of the extensions, while the also extended front portions of the covering flaps, C, C', which completely cover the blow-holes, may be spread open, whereby the edge of the harmonica containing the blow holes is exposed, and is thrust forward sufficiently to be used, by a spring, D, interposed between the rear of the covering or casing and the basepiece. To limit the advance of the instrument, studs, d, secured to the base-piece, A, and guided in slots, c, of the end walls of the casing, O, are provided, The covering flaps, C, C', are automatically closed by a helical spring, d, arranged on the hinge-pivot and whose ends are attached one to each of the covering iiaps. This spring also forces the front lips, c', of the covering flaps, C, C', into the grooves or notches, b on the reed-plates, B, thereby forming a close joint between thc covering flaps and the said reed-plates.

Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with a mouth-harmonica, of two hinged covering flaps attached to the body oi the harmonica and hinged together at the rear of theharmonica,substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a mouth-harmonica, of two covering flaps secured together in the rear of the harmonica by a spring-hinge, and attached to the body of the harmonica substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a mouth-harmonica provided with studs in its ends, of two covering iiaps secured together in the rear of the harmonica by a spring hinge, and slots in the covering in which the studs are guided, substantially as set Jforth.

et. The combination, with a mouth-harmonica, ot' two hinged covering flaps, hinged in the rear of the harmonica, and a spring interposed between the rear of the flaps and the harmonica, to automatically thrust the harmonica forward when the covering is opened, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the following parts: a mouth-harmonica provided with studs in its ends, covering flaps provided with slots for guiding the studs, and a spring interposed between the harmonica and the rear ot' the covering, whereby the harmonica is automatically thrust t'orward to a limited extent, when the fronts ot' the covering Iiaps are opened, and the covering is automatically closed upon pushing the harmonica back into the covering, substantially as set forth.
