To all whom it' may concern:

Be it known that I, l-IARTWELL R. MOORE, of Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Music-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The obj ect of my invention is to provide an adjustable music-holder for pianos and organs, which will be practically out of the way and concealed from view when closed; and the invention consists in the parts and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.

Figure l represents a perspective view of a piano, the lid being open and the musicholder in a position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the holder and adjacent parts, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line aot Fig. 2.

The front casing A of the piano is provided with a rectangular opening A. A swinging panel B is engaged in said opening by means of hinges C C. The inner side of the panel is provided with two parallel blocks D D, the respective inner sides of said blocks being provided with grooves having felt facing d (Z.

E indicates the back or body of the musicholder, which is provided on its lower side with an outwardly-extending foot-piece or flange E', and also provided on its rear side with two cleats e c. The respective sides of the music-holder are engaged in the felt-faced grooves in the blocks D D, A block F is hinged to t-he casing at the lower side of the opening A by hinges F and to the cleats e e 011 the inner side of the music-holder by hinges F2.

The operation is as follows: Then the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l, the piano is open and the music-holder drawn down- Ward and outward, ready for use. A similar position of the music-holder is also indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. 2 and the full lines in Fig. 3 represent the musieholder closed-that is to say, the holder is moved upward from the position shown in Fig. l, so as to cause the back E thereof to lie concealed in the rear of the panel to which it is engaged. Vhen the holder is closed, the footpiece E extends slightly outward beyond the face of the frame A, so as to enable one to catch said foot-piece between the thumb and nger and swing the panel and music-holder outward. The outward and downward movement of the. holder is limited by the block F. The felt facing in the panel-grooves engages the sides of the music-holder, so as to cause a snug lit. The holder, however, may be easily moved by hand, and will remain in any position.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with the musical instrument and its outward swinging panel hinged at its upper edge thereto, of a musicholder adjustable vertically on the rear face of the panel and adapted to move downward when the-panel is swung outward, substan tially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the musical instrument and its outward -swinging panel hinged at its upper edge thereto, of a music-1 holder adjustable vertically 011 the rear face of the panel, and a hinged connection between the instru ment-casing and the said holder, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the musical instrument having' a panel hinged thereto at its upper edge to swing outwardly, and having a vertical guide on its rear face, of a vertically-sliding music-holder connected with the said guide, and a hinged connection between the sliding holder and the instru ment-casing, substantially as set forth.

4. The oombinatiomwith a musical instrument of the character described, of a hinged panel provided with grooved blocks, the grooves being provided with felt, and a musicholder held to slide in said grooves, substantially as described.

5. In a music-holder for pianos and organs, the combination, with the casing, of a grooved panel hinged thereto, a music-holder having a foot-piece, said holder being adjustably engaged in the panel-grooves aforesaid, and a block having one side hinged to the musicholder and the other side hinged to the casing, substantially as shown and described.

The combination, in a music-holder, of the panel B, vertic. lly grooved at the back IOO thereof and hinged at its top to the pianoerse, the music-holder E, held to slide in the grooves of the panel, and the block F, hinged to the rear of the holder E and to jthe piano oase, to limit the outward movement of Said holder, substantially as described.

7.
