SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 516,070, dated March 6, 1894. Application filed May 21,1892. Renewed November 29, 1893. Serial No. 492.394. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WiLLrAM HADWEN AMES, residing at North Easton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of the burner; and Figs. 2, 3, and et are views showing two propellers.

This device belongs to the class called hydro-carbon burners, which are chiefly used in furnaces, and the novelty consists inthe stru cture of their several parts, in their combination with each other, and the device as a whole; all as will be described and pointed out in the claims. As this device, like my former one, is attached to the furnace in any well-known or usual way, it is not necessary now to show anything but the burner itself, and generally designate hoW it may be aplied to the furnace.

In the drawings, A, denotes a flange by which the burner is bolted to the furnace. The nozzle B is suitably attached to this plate, at about its center, and at the rear of it is a gauze plate chamber B which with necessary changes in mere size and shape, is but a continuation of the nozzle B. On the floor of this chamber B is a rack b, and in the upper part of the chamber are openings b'. Over the latter is a cover E, which can be secured in place by screw-bolts or otherwise. Through the openings b are placed screens or atomizers C, C', C2. In this device I arrange screens or atomizers as in my Patent No. 465,746, but introduce the oil pipe D through the elbow L into the chamber B', and at the end of the pipe, which is at a suitable distance from the screens C, C', G2, one or more orices, o, o, are made, through which the oil comes to the surface of the pipe. In the end of the pipe, next to the screens is a pin on which is placed one or more propellers or spreaders P, P. The air blast takes up the oil from the pipe at o, o, and blowing it against the propellers P, P', which are rapidly revolved by action of the air or steam blast, is spread in aspray over the surface of the screens,

in its subsequent passage through the meshes of the screens is more fully and perfectly atomized, and the air becomes uniformly charged with the minute particles of oil, and a more intense and steady fire is obtained with a less consumption of oil than when the air is not so perfectly and uniformly saturatcd.

In this device, the novelty consists in the introduction of the oil into that part of the chamber B immediately in front of the screens or atomizers C, C", (l2 in a horizontal position, the oil pipe being perforated with small holes o, o, and terminating with one or more propellers P, P.

Then using two propellers, I find, in praetiee, the best results are obtained by having them revolve in contrary directions. This modification, (improvement of my former patent,) is easily arranged at small cost, and is easily cared for.

Having now claim- 1. A hydro-carbon burner for furnaces or steam boilers, having interposed between the oil-supply pipe and the nozzle several Wire gauze or finely perforated plates, of suitable mesh or perforation, and one or two propel- Iers, with means for connecting them with the oil pipe and air blast apparatus, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination, a burner provided With an oil-feed pipe, projecting horizontally into a chamber, and terminating with oil holes, and one or more propellers; Wire gauze or perforated plates, and supplemental air blast, separated from the chamber holding the propellers and atomizers, and ending close to the lower edge of the nozzle, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with chamber B', having a rack b on its bottom, and in its upper part openings b', the oil-pipe D, the propellers P, P', and the gauze or perforated plate C, C', C2, placed in position in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
