OJL-BURNER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo: '703,566, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed September 11, 1900. Serial No. 29,701. (No model.)
To au w/wm 'z'; may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM H. FOX, residing at Wissahickon, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; of which the following is a specification. r
This invention provides improved means for mixing oil with air or steam, spraying the fluid product, and combining the same with free air in a manner highly advantageousfor securing close and perfect combustion,` affording an exceptional degree of efiiciency as well as a simple, economical, and durable construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional View of a furnace, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a'front Fig. 1. View of the nozzle of my burner, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the burner-nozzle.
As shown in the drawings, the burner has a nozzle l with a chamber 2 therein and a brancl 3 with the chamber 4 therein communicating 'With the chamber 2. The entrance to the noZzle-chamber is connected With an air or stean supply pipe 5, controlled by a Valve 6, and the entrance to the branch chamber is connected with an oil-supplypipe 7, controlled by a valve 8. The outlet end of the nozzle is provided with the chamber 9, which is separated from the cham'ber 2 by the diaphragm 10, 'having the peripheral -perforations 11 therethrough and'thecone 12 on the inner face thereof.
The burner-nozzle is conveniently supported by the bracket 13, Secured to a channelsection 14:, which is fixed to' the furnace-wall 15, the nozzle projecting through an opening 16 in the channel and into the inwardly-tapering' opening 17 through the furnace-wall. The opening 17, preferably circular in'crosssection, is conveniently'provided by building into the furnace-wall a specially-constructed brick 18, having the inwardly-tapering opening 17 formed therein, the bottom of the opening being downwardly in- `clined inwardly in order that any oil deposited thereon may be carried into the furnace. The burner nozzle is economically and preferably cast to form from cast-iron and the cylindrical chambers 2, '4, and 9 bored out clean and smooth, leaving the diaphragm 10 and the cone 12 as integral parts thereof. The holes 10, which penetrate the diaphragm at intervals around the base of the cone or peripherally to the diaphragm, are bored out so that their axes are outwardly divergent, and hence the fluid product of oil and air or steam mingled in the chamber 2 is dispersed not only by the cone 12, but 'also by the divergent apertures ll. Any oil that may deposit from the -fluid passing through the apertures 11 is collected 'by the' chamber 9 and Vaporized by being drawn into the stream of spray ejected through these apertures.
In operation the quantity of oil required is permitted to 'drip regularly through the passage orchamber 4 into the current of air, preferably, or steanfloWing under the necessary pressure'through the passage or chamber 2, by which the oil is dispersed and mingled with the air or steam. The fluid product `thus formed is spread by the cone 12 and ejected through the apertures ll in diverging streans of spray into and through the inwardly-tapering aperture 17 through the furnace-wall. This action draws in free outside air through the opening surrounding the burner-nozzle,- which free air combines with theyaporized product ejected through the nozzle, effecting close and perfect combustion and producing a flame of uniform and high temperature This burner is specially free from tendency to clog, permitting the use of crude unfiltered fuel-oil, and is constructed so that any clog or obstruction may readily be removed.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A burner comprising anozzle containing a miXing-chamber, a diaphragn consttuting one end of the miXingchamber and having a conical face and peripheral perforations, a controlled inlet-pipe closing the other end of the mixing chamber, for admitting air or stean into the mixing-chamber, and a controlled inlet-pipe connected to a port of the nozzle in front of the air or steam port for admitting oil to the mixing-chamber, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
`2Q Aburner conprising a nozzle containing a mixing-chamber, an integral diaphragn constituting one end of the mixing-chamber IOO and having a conical face and outwa'dly-divergent pe'iphe'al perforations, :in integral, open chamber exterior to the diaphragn, a controlled inlet-pipe closing the other end of the nixing-chamber, for adnitting air or steam into the mixing-chambe', and a controlled inlet-pipe connected to a port of the nozzle in front of the air or steam port for admitting oil to the mixing-chanber, substantially as and for the purposes set fo'th.
3. A burne' conp'isinga nozzle containing :L mixing-chamber, a diaphragm constituting one end of the miXing-clamber and having a conical face and. peripheral perforations, a controlled inlet-pipe closing the other end of Witnesses:
