My invention relates to burners for heavy oils and analogous combustibles.
As is known in the art, it has already been proposed to dispose the needle valve of the atomizer or other element from which leaves the combustible spray in the bottom of a sort of deflector composed of a cup in the form of a spherical cap or cone in order to cause the flame to be drawn back toward the 1 atomizer. The result expected has been exceeded. As a matter of fact the flame aproaches the atomizer up to the point where it begins at the needle valve orifice even,
which has the disadvantage of producin at the said orifice a certain amount of car on which rapidly closes the said orifice.
My invention has chiefly for an olH'ect not only to overcome the above indicate disadvantage but also to diminish the risks of accidental extinction of the said burners and to assure a better combustion of the fluids feeding the said burners.
My invention will be more readily understood by those skilled in the art to which my 5 invention pertains in the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which- Fig. 1 is a section taken through my deflector along the line 11 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a section through a burner with my improved deflector applied thereto.
In the following description my invention will be described as applied to an atomizer or other apparatus for spraying the combustible.
By any suitable process and any suitable material I construct an element a, preferably cast of steel, which element comprises a substantially frusto conical portion a, forming the deflector so to speak and a cylindrical parta for the purpose of mounting the said deflector which is to receive it.
The said cone is provided with a number of small sleeves o whose axis is substantially tangential and directed toward the larger base of the cone a but at the same time forming a certain angle with the generatrix which cuts the said axis.
I further provide on the cone a between the part a and the sleeves a a series of cylindrical holes a.
I likewise provide between the sleeves a and the base of the cone a two series of tapered cylindrical holes a.
As shown in Fig. 3 the said conical member is attached to an atomizer b by any suitable means.
As concerns the disposition of the deflector a in the furnace mouth or combustion tube a I have determined by experiment that the said distance follows a constant law which establishes that the distance d of the base of the cone from the furnace mouth must equal the diameter D of the said furnace mouth. The outlet of member C may be slightly restricted as shown. This specific location of the deflector has been found to improve the character of the flame under varying conditions of the velocities of the fuel and the air.
The flame of a burner produced according to the invention is better re lated than in burners of the prior art. he said flame originates at a very short distance from the orifice which emits the spray and no carbon is produced at the orifice. In addition the position of the deflector with respect to the furnace mouth and the said deflector being perforate itself establishes not only a better mixture of the comburant and the combustible but also utilizes the entire reverberation of the flame.
As shown in Fig. 3, I referably dispose a small tube e perpendicu arlyin the wall of the deflector of the atomizer which has its ends parallel with the axis of the atomizer. Beneath the tube a I provide the furnace mouth wall with a small depression or drain opening a for collecting drops of combustible which leak from the burner during stopping. I thus assure that there is no deposit of combustible in the furnace mouth which deposit could readily become transformed into carbon when the apparatus is again started.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An oil burner comprising a combustion tube, a fuel atomizing nozzle in said tube, a substantially frusto-conical deflector surrounding said nozzle having a plurality of openin s in the side wall thereo and apertured sieves aligned with some of said 0 nin and projecting from the outer we of said deflector along lines extending toward the larger base of and substantially tangential to the outer periphery of said frustoconical deflector.
2. An oil burner comprising a combustion tube, a fuel atomizing nozzle 1n said tube, a substantially frusto-conical deflector surrounding said nozzle having a plurality of openin in the side wall thereo and apertured s eeves aligned with some of said openin and projecting from the outer wall of said deflector along lines extending toward the lar r base of and substantially tangential to t e outer periphe of said conical deflector, the larger base 0 said frusto-conical deflector being spaced from the outlet of said combustion tube a distance substantially equal to the internal diameter of said tube.
3. An oil burner comprising a combustion tube, a fuel atomizing nozzle in said tube, a substantially frusto-conical deflector surrounding said nozzle having a lurality of openin in the sidewall thereoi and apertured s eeves aligned with some of said 0 nin and projecting from the outer wal of said deflector along lines extending toward the lar er base of and substantially tangential to tile outer periphery of said frusto-conical deflector, some of said openings disposed on both sides of said apertured sleeves.
4. An oil burner comprising a combustion tube, an atomizer nozzle in said tube, a substantially frusto-conical deflector surrounding said nozzle, an oil drain opening in the bottom of said combustion tube, and a short tube extending through the side wall of said conical deflector having one end disposed beneath said atomizer nozzle and its other end over said drain opening, the ends of said short tube being spaced from nozzle and drain opening.
