UNITED v STATES PATENr rrircn.
GEORGE A. CURTIS, OF MALDEN, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F. BAKER, OF
' BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HEEL-NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.5l5,952, dated March 6, 1894. Application filed September 30,1393. fierial N0. 486,85- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CURTIS, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Nails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heel nails which are used in blind nailing, the heads of the nails being embedded in the material of the top lift.
The invention has for its object to provide certain improvements in nails of this class, such as shown in my Patent No. 502,550, granted August 1, 1893, whereby the insertion of the head of the nail into the top lift is facilitated and its hold on the top lift strengthened, making the top lift less liable to pull ofii than heretofore.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim. 4 Y
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 represent side views of heel nails embodying my improvements. Fig. 5 represents an end elevation of the nail looking onto the head thereof. Fig. 6 represents a section on line 6, 6, Fig. 2. Fig.7represents a sectional view of a portion of the heel, showing one of my improved nails engaged with the heel.
The same letters and numerals of reference represent the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings or represents the shank or body of the nail, which is preferably cylindrical and has an awl-shaped point at one end adapted to readily penetrate the lifts of a heel without requiring the previous formation of a hole to receive it and also to readily turn and clinch as indicated in Fig. 7. On the other end of the shank is formed a wedgeshaped head having the inclined sides 2, 2, the base of the head being preferably cylindrical and of greater diameter than that of the shank. The shank or body of the nail is provided just below the head with grooves or recesses 3, 3, the upper ends 4:, l of which are substantially at a right angle with the length of the shank. Said grooves receive portions of the material of the top lift and enable the nail head to be securely engaged with said lift, the ends 4, i of the grooves and the inclined sides 2, 2 of the heads forming barbs which are readily engaged with the top lift, but are not so readily withdrawn or disengaged.
It will be seen that the grooves or recesses formed in the sides of the nail give the head greater depth under sides 4:, 4 than it would otherwise possess, unless the diameter of the head were correspondingly increased. It is very desirable that the diameter of the head be reduced to as near the diameter of the shank as possible in order that the nail may enter the dies of the prevailing types of heel nailing machines. This result is accomplished by making the grooves or recesses under the head. I prefer to make said grooves by indenting the body of the nail at opposite sides without cutting away any of the material, so that there are two grooves or recesses separated by the slight ridges or ribs 7 which are the result of the displacement of the metal in forming the grooves.
In Figs. 3, 4 and 7, I show the nail provided with a collar 8 located below the grooved or recessed portion, said collar being of the same diameter as the base of the head and formed to bear on the lift of the heel next the top lift, as shown in the above mentioned patent.
This improved nail is adapted to be made of wire.
A nail having awedge-shaped head with a cylindrical base which is of greater diameter than the body of the nail is new, so far as I am aware, and I therefore desire to cover the same broadly.
I claim-- A heel nail comprising in its construction a wedge-shaped cutting or penetrating head, extending diametrically across its end and the base of which is cylindrical, and projects outwardly from the body of the nail on all sides and a cylindrical shank or body of less diameter than the base of the head, said shank being indented at two opposite points under the lower ends of the inclined sides of the heads, to form recesses, the uppei' ends of two subscribing Witnesses, this 22d day of Sep- Which are substantially at right angles with tember, A. D. 1893. the shank and with said inclined sides coni stitute barbs or acute angled projections GEORGE (JURTIS' 5 adapted to engage a top lift, as set forth. WVitnesses:
In testimony whereof I have signed my C. F. BROWN,
name to this specification, in the presence of A. D. HARRISON.
