Be i known that we, PETER J. PAULY, J r., and IIERMAN SCHNEIDER, of the oity of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have joinoly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shelving, of whieh the following is a full, olear, and exaot: deseription, referenoe being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

Our invention has relation to adjustable shelving and consists in the novel arrangement and cornbination of parts more particular1y sei; forth in the speoifieatiou and pointed out in the olairns.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspeotive view of a oase embodyingourinvention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the Same with parts brokenaway. Fig. 3 is a plan view 01: the rear wall 0f't-he casing with pants broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the shelf. Fig. 5 is a perspeotive view of the rear and 0ne side wall Of the casing andaportion 0f the shelf supported thereby witl1 parts b1oken away; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal seetion in detail showing a portion 0f the side and rear Wall of the casing and represlenting a modifieation of our invention.

The invention is intended principally for books but ean be oonstrueted for ot;her purposes where adjustable shelving is desired without departing fro1n the nature of theinvention.

It eonsists of a suitable casing having hooked plates or supports secured to the inner surface of the side Walls of the same, openings forn1ed in the back wall of the oasing and in a vertical plane, 01 formed in an additional plate whieh is seeured within the easing, a shelf orshelves provided either with 01 without rollers and having opposicely projeoting hooked ends which hooks are adapted to be received by the sa iol hooked plates, and additional hooks on said shelves proj eoting in the Same direetion and adapted to be received by the openings looated at the rear portion of the oasing whereby the said shelves are adjustably seoured within the same.

Referring to the drawings, 1 representsa oasingwhieh is preferably made of sheet metal and suitably ornamented in design. T0 the opposite side walls of the easing and adja to the front of the sarne are secured h00l ed plates 0x supports 2, a strip of metal 3 being} interposed betWeen said plates and the innen surface of the side Wall of the casing whereby a spaee 4 is lefb between the plates and the side of the oasing for the purpose hereinafter descriloed. The hooks 5 of the hooked plates are all similarly construoted and bot1- sist of a series of 'right angular projections providing bearing surfaoes 6 and spaoes 7 for the insertion of the hooked ends of the shelf. Formed in the rear wall 8 of the casing and in a vertieal plane are a series of elongated openings 9 the number of whioh eorrespond t0 that of the hooks 5 formed on the plates 2, and are adapted t0 support the opposite ends ol: the shelves. In Fig. 6 we have shown a modification of this construction by dispensing With the elongated openings 9 formedin the rear Wall of the easing and in lieu thereof we exnploy an additional plate 10 suitaloly shaped and seoured to the easing within the same. Formed in said plate area series of similar openings 11 which are adapted to reeeive the hooks for1ned on the rear ende of the shelves in a similar manner. In the present case we have only shown one shelf but in praotice any nuxnber may be used, the same being especially constructed for the purpose.

12 represents the adj ustable shelf comprising two transverse strips 01' pieoes 13, 14, and four longitudinal strips the outer ones of which are designated by the numeral 15 and 8 5 the two intermediate or inner ones by the numeral 16. The strips 16 lead from the transverse strip 13 to the transverse piece 14, but; the longitudinal strips 15 lead from the transverse strip 13 and are attached to the 0 ende of the strip 14, laut project a suitable distance therefrom. Bebween the strips 15 and 16 anynumber of rollers 17 maybe journaled for guiding and supporting the book within the oase. T0 the oute1 surface of the 5 strip 13 are attaohed ears 18 between whioh are journaled two rollers 19 which perform the sau1e funotion as the rollers previously referred to. The ende of the strip 13 of the shelf projeot a suitable distanoe beyond the xoo strips 15 and are provided with hooks 20, the metal 21 of the same being of such a width as t0 freely pass within the space 7 formed in the plates 2 and allow ehe bearing surfaees 22 to rast upon the bearing surfaces 6 of said plates, the spaee 4 between said plates and Jahe side walls of the casing being such as to admit the remaining portion of the hooked ends as best shown in Fig. 2. As before stated the rear ends 0f the strips 15 projeet a suitable distance beyond the transverse strip 14 and formed on said projecting ends are hooks 23 which a.re received by the elon-- ga.t@d openings 9 of the rear wall of the casing, 0x the openings 11 of the plate as shown in the modification of Fig. 6. The hooks 23 thus eonstructed a.re provided with bea.ring surfaces 24 which-are adapted to rest upon the lower termina'oions2 01: said elengated openings asbest shown in Fig. 5.

By the construetion before deseribed the shelving cannot be dislocated when once arranged Within the casing by being accidentally struck by a book 0r other objeet, and further, is very durable and will withstand the rough usage to whieh the same is neeessarily subjected.

Having described 0ur invention, what we claim is A ease eomprising plates 2right angular projections 5 forming a part of the same and providing hooks,bearingsurfaces 6 and spaces 7 formed by said right anguleu projections, elongated openings 9 formed in the rear wa1l 0f the easing, a shelf 12 composed of transverse pieces 13 and 14, and longitudinal pieces 15 and 16; hooks 20 formed on the projecting ends 0f the strip 13 andadapted tobe-received by the plates2,hooks 23 'formed 0n the proje0ting ende df thelongitudirrltrigis 15 and adapted tobe reeeive"d by"the=said' elongated openings, and=strips 3 secure;d between thestrips2'and the-side wall-sof the ca.sing providing a space 4'for t-he passage of the hooks 20, substantially asset forth.
