HARRY C. SMITH, O F WATERTOWN, NEW YORK. Y
DRAWER EXTENSION.
SPECIFICATION `forming part of Letters Patent N o. 524,225, dated August 7, 1894.
Application filed Aprill', 1893.
To all whoml it may concern: p p p Be it known that l, HARRY v C. SMITH, of
Watertown, in the county of Jefferson, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawer Extensions,
of which the following, taken in connection with' the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. y l f This invention relates to the class of furniture drawers which are provided with horizontal slides supportingthe drawerin its eX- treme outer position.
The object of my present invention is to provide the drawer with supporting slides which shall permit the drawer to fit closely to the linner sides of the case in which it is seatd and thus obviate wastage of room in said case; and to that end the invention consists in the combination `of the case having horizontal guide-grooves sunken in its sides and extending from the rear of the case part way toward the front thereof, horizontal guides within the sides of the drawer, bars sliding in said guides, stops in the guides limiting the movement of said bars, and lugs on the bars engaging the stops, said guides, bars, stops, and lugs being all sunken in the adjacent sides of the case and drawer to allow said sides to be contiguous to each other all as hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claim. Y Y
In the annexed drawings'Figure lis aside view of the interior o`f the case with two of the drawers respectively in extreme outer and inner positions. Fig. 2 is a rear end View of one of the drawers and adjacent portion of the case. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line anw, in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line y, y, in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detached side viewof one of the drawers. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modification of my invention, and Fig. 7 is a transverse section on line -Z'Z in Fig. 6.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
C- represents the inclosing case of the drawers designated by the reference letters -D. When my invention is applied to the drawers of safes the aforesaid case consists of the metallic inside lining of the safe. The inner sides of the case eC- I provide with horizontal longitudinal grooves CL-cw with the inner end Serial No. 470,645. (No model.)
sunken therein and extending from the rear part way toward the front of the case for the purpose hereinafter explained. To the adja` cent sides of the drawer -D-I secure longitudinally movable horizontal braces orbars -0Zd preferably of steel, which slide in longitudinal grooves -b-bsunken in the exterior ofthe sides of the drawer so as to 6c receive the entire body of the bars eZ-CZ- and allow the drawer to fit closely to the inner sides of the case -C- and thus save room and accommodate a drawer of maxim'umsize.A
The sides of the drawer I provide with slots `6 5 -c-cparallel with the grooves -b-band extending through the sides, and part way the central portion thereof and through these slots I pass lugs or screws -ee which bear with their heads on theinnersides of the 7o drawer and are screwed into the sidesof the bars -cZ-dand thus sustain them in the grooves -b-b. Each of the bars -dhas projecting from it a lug or stop-pin -fwhich slides in the groove -a in the adja- 75 cent side of the case. This groove and the slot cfare of such lengths as to cause the stop-pin f of the bar dto strike the outer end of the groove a when the drawer is drawn' part way outward, and in the further 8o outward movement of the drawer the aforesaid engagement of the stop-pin holds the bar -cZ- stationary and causes the lug or screw -e to slide in the slot -cin the side of the drawer until the drawer is in its extreme outer position as represented by full lines in Fig. l of the drawings, at which position its furtheroutward movement is arrested by the screw e coming in contact of the slot c-. 9o To support the drawer in a horizontal position when drawn out as aforesaid I provide the inner ends of the bars dcl` with topbearings -dengaging the interior of the case. These top-bearings may be on the stoppin -f and engage the top of the groove `aas represented in Fig. 7 of thew drawings, or said bearings may be formed of vertical arms -dbent up from' the rear ends of the bars -d and made to bear either on roo the under side of the top of the case C- oron the under side of the ledges 'Z which project from the inner sides of the case and supportthe drawer. The bars -cZ--d be ing pushed rearward in the outward movement of the drawer as before described, bring the bearings or arms -da sufficient distance back from the front of the case to obtain `the necessary purchase to support the drawer in its extreme outer position.
Itwill be observed that by my invention the slides, guides, stops and lugs are all sunken in the adjacent sides of the case and ze drawer and thus the latter is fitted closely to ing itssides contiguous to the inner sides of the case, horizontal guides within the sides of the drawer, bars sliding in said guides, stops in the guides limiting the movement of said bars, and lugs on the bars engaging said stops, said guides, bars, stops and lugs being all sunken in the adjacent sides of the case and drawer all constructed and combined to save room and accommodate a drawer of maximum size substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have vhereunto signed my name this 10th day of April, 1893.
