SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,757, dated February 13, 1894.

It is necessary to construct galleys in such a way that their sides will be very stiif and strong, and it is also necessary for convenient use to have the galley as light as possible. The principal strain on the galley is at the corners, and my improvement relates particularly to the construction of the corners, and is intended to make the corners true and perfect and as strong as if the three sides of the galley were composed'of a single plece.

To these ends, my invention consists of a printers galley, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,

in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the galley embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a broken detail perspective view with one of the side pieces and the head piece separated to show the construction of the corner. Fig. 3 is a broken detail sectional plan of one corner of the galley, showing how the adjacent parts are fastened together; and Fig. 4 is a broken detail sectional plan of a modified means of forming the corner of the galley.

The galley 10 is of the usual shape, having one end open, as shown in Fig. 1, and its body portion is made up of the parallel side pieces 11 and the head piece 12 which connects the two side pieces. These

11 and 12 are broader at the base than at the top in order that they may have the necessary strength and lightness, and at the corners 13 the

11 and 12 are mitered so as to make perfect joints, as shown clearly in Figs. 1, 3 and 4.

In the side pieces 11 and head piece 12, at the corners, are made longitudinal holes 14 which register and which are adapted to re ceive the fastening pins 15. Each pin 15 extends longitudinally into the hole 14 of one of the side pieces 11, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and the pin is bent at a right angle, so that it may also enter the hole 14 in the head piece 12. The pin fits snugly, so that when the ends of the side and head piece are brought together, perfect joints will be made and the parts prevented from separating, but

to guard against any possible separation the following means of fastening is used.

Each member of the pin 15 is transversely grooved ornicked, as shown at 16, and the side and head piece, adjacent to the pin, are transversely perforated, as shown at 17, these perforations registering with the grooves or nicks 16 when the corner is made. Pins 17 are then driven through the perforations 17 and the grooves or nicks 16. The pins 17 are preferably tapered so that they may be driven snugly home, and they should be made to drawsomewhat on the walls of the nicks or grooves 16 so that when the said pins are driven home they will cause the ends of the side and head piece to be drawn tightly together. The pins are smoothed off at their ends so that they do not show, and the walls of the galley are left perfectly smooth. Instead of having the pins go entirely through the side pieces and head piece, as illustrated in Fig. 3, short tapering pins 17? may be used, which may be driven partially through the said pieces from the inner side, as shown longitudinally into the side and head piece,

the pin having transverse nicks or grooves therein, and fastening pins extending transversely through the side piece and head piece and through the said nicks in the longitudinal pin, substantially as described.
