Description

(No Model.) E H. B. EVEREST.
PACKING BOX.
Patented Feb. 6
HIRAM B. EVEREST, OF
nrrc.
PATENT RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.
PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,854, dated February 6, 1894.
Application filed October 23, 1893- Serial No. 488,924. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM B. EVEREST, of Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in packing boxes, having reference more particularly to boxes for the storage and transportation of oranges and other green fruits.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved simple and inexpensive duplexbox, which can be readily separated or divided into two parts or sections and having thorough ventilation at its center and throughout every point.
The invention comprises the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of myimproved packing box. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is aview showingthe box divided into two halves.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the complete box; a the ends thereof composed of four strips or stiles 0. and bars or slats a arranged with intervening spaces for the admission of air.
13,13, designate central partitions constructed similarly in every respect to the ends a. These partitions are arranged with an intervening space 1) between their opposed faces.
The'four sides of the box are composed,
- each of two long strips or boards 0 which extend from end to end of the box, and are secured to ends a and also to the central partitions B by means of nails b or their equivalents. Intermediate of these strips or boards G are two corresponding strips or boards D, each of which extends from one end a, to one of the partitions B, thus leaving an intervening space or opening cl between the adjacent ends of said short boards I), admitting air to pass into the space 1) between the partitions B and through the spaced-apart bars of the latter into the oranges, or the like, at or near the center of box A. Narrow openings are also left between the edges of boards 0 and D.
When it is desired to sell or use but half a box of oranges, as frequently occurs, the division is readily and easily made by sawing the series of long strips or boards 0 between the partitions B, and in this way two complete half-boxes are obtained.
The advantages of my invention are apparent. It is well known that oranges and other fruit often spoil for want of air andventilation at or near the center of the packing box, and hence by means of my improved box a complete and thorough circulation can be had throughout the entire box, and this without weakening the strength of the latter or materially adding to the expense thereof. It is also often found necessary to divide a box of oranges or the like, as when a purchaser desires but half a box, and this can be readily accomplished by my invention without disturbing the contents of the box or either half-box or in any way affecting the partitions.
It will be understood that slight changes may be made in the construction of my improved packing box as shown without departing from the spirit of my invention, as, for instance, the ends a, may be made solid if desired. The number of duplex partitions may be increased, as also the length or size of the whole package, so as to make three or more compartments if desired.
A packing box constructed as herein described is strong and durable, is easily divisibio, and by means thereof complete ventilation may be obtained at every point.
I claim as my inventioncomplete parts or sections having correspond,- ing ends and central double partitions, composed of spaced apart bars or slats and strips or boards connecting said parts or sections and capable of being divided or separated bebetween said central partitions, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein described improved packingbox, consisting of two corresponding ends 1. A packing box formed in two or more formed of spaced-apart bars or strips, two In testimony whereof I have signed this corresponding central partitions also formed specification in the presence of two subscrib- Io of spaced-apart bars, and long strips or boards ing witnesses.
extending from one of said ends to the other,
5 and short strips or boards secured to said ends HIRAM EVEREST and to said partitions with intervening spaces Witnesses: between their inner opposite ends, substan- ELEANOR EVEREST,
tially as set forth. CARRIE EVEREST.
