Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
M. o. oEoNK, 0E AUBURN, NEW YORK.
BED-BOTTOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,429. dated December 12, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, M. C. GRONK, of Auburn,in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads 5 and I hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description ot' the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference, marked thereon.
Figure 1 in the annexed drawings represents a longitudinal section of my bedstead. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cross-bar to which the webbing is attached. Fig. 3 exhibits a plan of the eye and the mode of attaching the webbing to it.
The nature ot' my invention consists in the use of certain mechanical devices for attaching the slats to the head and foot of a common bedstead.
Fig. l in the annexed drawings represents a longitudinal section of a bedstead with a slat attached, the slat B extending lengthwise of' the bedstead. To both ends of each slat is strongly fastened the eye C, made sufficiently strong to sustain the pressure that may be put on the slats.
To the inner side ofthe head and foot board is fastened with screws a cross-bar D. On the inner surface ofthe bars D a groove is cut, extending from end to end, and at stated distances mortises made from the outside ot D to the groove on the inner side.
In order to fasten the slats in position, pieces of webbin g e, ofsuitablelen gth, are doubled and passed through the eyes C, and a metal rod, t',
inserted in the loops formed by doubling the webbing. The webbing is then put through the eyes C, folded over a short metal rod, s, placed transversely across the eye, and secui-el y screwed to the webbing above it.
As there is more weight upon the slats near thehead ofthe bed than near the foot, it will be noticed that the webbing will be increased in width where the pressure is greatest.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the eye C, the webbing e, the bars D, the rods i, and the short rods s, the whole constructed and operating as and for the purpose herein set forth.
M. C. URONK.
