To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. MCDOWELL, a citizen of theUnited States, residing atLower Merion, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania,have invented anew and use ful Improvement in Open Fireplace-Grates, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying draw- Ings.

My invention consists of a fire place grate, having a blower which may be placed in open and closed and intermediate positions, as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an open fire place grate embodying my invention, the blower thereof being raised. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of a portion of the grate with the blower lowered. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on line 00, 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a portion on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a portion, certain parts being in different positions from those shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of aportion, certain parts being in different positions from those shown in Figs. 4 and 5.' v

Referring to the drawings: A designates an open fire place grate, the jambs or sides of which are provided with steps B, B, anyone of the latter being adapted to support the section 0 of a blower, when the same is not in its lowermost position. The said section 0 is formed with a ledge D, adapted to support the lower section E, when the former is raised, (in the present case above the step B) so that both sections 0 and E may. move together. The ledge D is provided with a lug D which may be taken hold of after the manner of a handle, in order to raise and lower the section.

The upper portion of the section E is formed with a flange or head F, which is guided in a groove G, formed by astrip H, and a hood J the object of said head being to provide a support for the section E, when the latter is not supported by the ledge D, it being no ticed that the hood J has at its lower end a ledge K, which sustains the flange F of the section E, when the latter is in its lowermost position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and in full lines in Fig. 6. The hood J may be secured to the grate A by screws L.

M designates plates secured to the side of the grate A, and which in connection with the steps B form grooves N, which are continuous of the grooves G, and serve as guides or ways in which the sections 0 and E may travel.

.In the present case, the plates M are held in position on the grate A by means of screws P and lugs Q, it being noticed that said lugs are portions of the hood J, and bear against the upper portions of the plates M.

The steps B may be secured to the jambs of the grate A by means of screws R.

The operation is as follows: When the sections 0 and E are raised, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the section E rests on the ledge D, and the section 0 rests on the top step B, the grate thus being open in front. When itis desired to lower the sections in order to close the grate, the same is accomplished by drawing out the ledge D from the steps B, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the section 0 may now be lowered, and with it the section E, both lowering together until the flange F comes in contact with the ledge K, when the farther descent of the section E ceases, and the same is retained in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6, and in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The section 0 may however be lowered to full extent, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus the grate is closed in front. If desired the section 0 may be only partly lowered, and retained in position by resting its ledge D on one of the intermediate steps B, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.

It is evident that the draft may be regulated by raising and lowering the sections 0 and E to greater or less extent.

When it is desired to raise both sections 0 and E, to their full extent, the same is accomplished by first raising the section 0, and as its ledge D coming in contact with the bottom of the section E, it will carry the latter with it, until both sections are inthe positions shown in Fig. 5. The section 0 is then moved inwardly or rearwardly, so as to rest on the top steps B, when both sections will be held or supported, as shown in Fig. 4.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An open fire-place grate having a hood, and strips forming guideways, and a sectional blower vertically movable in said guide-ways, said hood having a ledge on its lower end engaging the flange on the upper end of that one of the sections of said blower which moves adjacent thereto, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. An open fire place grate having the steps B, B detachably secured to its side walls, the hood J secured to said walls and forming a guide-way, a blower-formed of upper and lower sections, the lower section having a ledge on its lower end, and the upper section having a flange on its upper end, a ledge on the lower end of said hood adapted to be engaged WILLIAM L. MGDOlVELL.
