In order to obtain a movement such as will increase the throw of the door, and so increase the distance where the shelf is drawn by the lever out of the oven, I pivot or hinge the door some distance back from the opening into the oven, the advantage of such hinging being that as the door swings to a point farther from the edge of the oven the shelf can be drawn out just so much farther in opening the door.
The hinge I desire to employ is what may be termed a double hinge, being shown in the drawings at j, the inner end of which is pivoted to a lug "L on the body of the stove, and the outer end being pivoted to a lug 7.: The hinge is supported on the platform Z, which relieves it of strain, also sustaining the weight of the door when open. The platform has an abutment-shoulder Z at its outer end to limit the movement of the hinge j.
Vhen the door it is closed, it will swing on the double hinge, turning on the outer hinge, while it swings on the inner hinge, and so providing for the carrying of the door entirely to one side of the mouth of the oven, and then after the closing of the door against the mouth of the oven, the inner edge of the door fitting some distance beyond the mouth of the oven nearest the hinge, such construction permitting the movement of the door without forming any obstruction to the movement of the shelves when they are first drawn out of the oven. The outer edge of the platform I is rounded off, as at l, to allow the hinge j to swing freely, a slight abutment Z being at the outer side thereof, against which the leaf portion of the double hinge j will strike, and so prevent said leaf portion from moving beyond the platform.
. As it is desirable to have the shelves so arranged that both of them or either of them will be drawn out when the door is opened, or that the door may be opened without drawing out the shelves, I employ the rods 17 having the hooks p, which hooks when the rods are turned pass into or out of slots or holes 1 in the ends of the rods fg, respectively, according to whichever shelf it is desired to draw out of the oven. Therods 19 extend through thebody of the door h, and are journaled in suitable bearings cast in the body of the door. The rods 1) have handles on the outer surfaces of the door by which they can be operated. The hooks 1) move in such a course that when the door is closed and the rod turned in one direction the hook will pass through the slot or opening 7" in the end of the lever and so connect the door to the lever and the shelf to which the lever is pivoted, the stop or shoulder f on the shelf being in such position as to guide the lever in proper position to be engaged by the hook when it is turned.

The several parts embodying my invention having been arranged in the manner above described, their operation is as follows: When the door is closed and the shelves rest in their normal position within the oven, the levers f g extend out into the space 77. within the doorand rest against the stops or shoulders If it is desired to open the door without moving the shelves, the rods 1) .areturned into such positions that their hooks do not engage with the levers; but if it is desired to draw out one of the shelves-- such as the upper shelf c-before opening the door, the upper rod 19 is turned, so that its hook p enters the slot or hole 7' at the end of the lever f, so connecting the door to the lever and its shelf. After the door is opened it draws out the shelf with it, and as the movement of the part of the door at which the lever is connected is greater than that part of the door near its hinge, in the first stages of the movement of the shelf, it enters the space it of the door, the door swinging 011 its hinge and its edge being drawn away, so that it will not come into contact with the shelf, the pivoting or hinging of the door some distance from the mouth of the oven enabling it to swing to one side and to move in a larger radius, and so enabling me to draw the shelf out a considerable distance. As the point of the door to which the shelf is connected is swung to one side, it swings on the double hinge until the lever f passes to the side of the front inner corner of the shelf, the lever extending into the space within the door and on account of the curved shape of the lever, this movement being continued for a greater swing of the door than if the straight lever were employed, as the edge of the lever does not strike the inner edge of the door so soon. The shelf may be in this way drawn out of the oven for a considerable distance, indeed over half of its length, and so give easy access to all parts of the shelf. When it is desired to close the oven, as the door is drawn around through the lever f, it forces the shelf back into the oven,the lever swinging between the steps or shoulders f f and carrying the shelf back to its original position. If it is desired to draw out the lower shelf, the hook p of the upper rod 13 is disengaged from the lever f, and the hook of the lower rod caused to engage with the lever g, that acting to draw out the lower shelf as the door is opened, in the manner above described.
I am thus enabled to operate the shelves without cutting off any of the front portion thereof, and to draw them out for a suflicient distance to giveeasy access to the entire shelf, and to draw out either shelf, as may be de sired; and I so overcome all danger of burning of the hands in reaching within an oven through direct contactwith'the shelves, greatly increasing the convenience to the housewife in the Work necessary in connection With baking and like operations.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a stove or range oven, a shelf sliding therein, a lever pivoted to said shelf, and a double hinge pivoted some distance from the mouth of the oven and also pivoted to the body of the door, said door be ing connected to said lever, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of a stove or range oven, a double hinge pivoted some distance from the mouth of the oven, and a door pivoted to said double hinge near the forward face thereof, and a platform over which said double hinge travels, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The combination of a stove or range oven, a shelf sliding therein, a lever pivoted to the under part of said shelf, and a guidestrip secured to the under side of said shelf supporting the lever, substantially as and for the purposes set-forth.
5. The combination of a stove or range oven, a shelf sliding therein, the lever f, pivoted to the rear of said shelf, the guide-strip f secured beneath said shelf and supporting the said lever, a hinged door 71, having the rod 19 secured thereto, and the hook p, engaging with the lever f and detachable therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
