To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. MOELROY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to wearing apparel, and its object is to provide a new and improved collar which is simple and durable in construction, arranged to retain at all times the proper form, and which permitsof conveniently washing and iro'ning part of the collar when necessary.

The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafterdescribed and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of theimprovement with parts broken out. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.

The improved collar is provided with a shell A, made of linen or other suitable fabric, and cut to the desired shape, the lower end of the shell being open so as to form a compartment B within the shell, for receiving a stiifening plate 0, which retains theshell in the proper shape.

In order to make the shell A, I double the blank at the middle so that the shell itself forms the two facings for the collar, and also the compartment B, to which access is had from the lower edge of the shell. The buttonhole ends A of the collar, are formed in the usual manner by uniting the two shell sides by means of stitches, the inner edge A of each button-hole end A being beveled, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to formaseat for the correspondingly shaped bevels on the end 0' of the stiffening plate C. The latter may be made of sheet metal, cardboard, celluloid, or other suitable material, which can be bent sufficiently to conform to the shape of the collar when worn, and which also permits of being put in place within the shell A, or removed therefrom whenever it is desired to wash and iron the shell. The stiffening plate O,is preferably made U shaped as shown in Fig. 2, the middle portion 0 engaging the doubled-up part of the shell throughout its length, as plainly indicated in said Fig. 2. From this middle portion 0 depends an arm 0 at about the middle of the shell, and in this arm is formed an aperture 0 for the passage of the collar button, also passing through the usual slots A arranged in thesides of the shell and in alignment with the apertures 0 as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. The opening 0 is large enough to permit the passage of the head of the collar button, it being, however, understood that when the collar is worn, only the shank of the button is engaged by the aperture (3 and the registering slot A The stifiening plate G, will, at all times, hold the shell in a proper form, while thecollar is worn, and when it is desired to wash the collar the stiffening plate 0 is removed and the shell A, only, is washed and ironed, While the stiffening plate 0 is meanwhile used on other similarly constructed shells already washed and ironed. Thus, the stiffening plate may be used for a large number of shells.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A stifiening plate for collars, comprising an approximately U-shaped plate provided at its middle with a depending arm having an aperture in its end, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the linen collar, A, having an opening along the lower edge, of the U-shapeil, stiffening plate, 0, which extends around the edge of said collar leaving the body thereof free, and is provided with the depending arm, 0 having a button-hole that registers with the similar hole in the collar proper, as shown and described.

3. A collar comprising a shell forming a compartment open at the lower edge of the shell and formed at its ends with beveled seats, and a stilfening plate adapted to be inserted in the said shell and formed at its ends with bevels adapted to be seated on the said beveled ends of the shell and provided at its middle with a depending apertured arm, substantially as shown and described.
