SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,269, dated January 23, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RHINEHAED B. A. KNOP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails;

and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to provide a pail capable of being collapsed and folded into small compasswhen not in use, and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings: Figure l representsa vertical section of a pail constructed according to myinvention in condition for use, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same taken on line 2-2 of the preceding figure.

Referring by letter tothe drawings, A represents the bottom of my pail, this bottom being of sheet-metal or other suitable material provided with a vertical flange b`of any suitable height. As herein shown the flange has its upper portion folded on itself in such a manner as to form an annular recess c in which the lower edge of an endless web of water-proof canvas or other pliable waterproof material B is clamped. The endless web of pliable material is shown as having its upper 4edge clamped in a depending annularly recessed portion d of a sheet-metal top C, the latter in this instance having a hinged section D held closed bya spring-snap e or other suitable means, and said cover has a downwardly extended flange f of such dimensions as to inclose and fit snug against the bottom iange b when the pail is collapsed. To the top-flange f I prefer to connect a bail E as shown in Fig. 1. U

While the pail as thus far described 1s shown as having a circular bottom, wall and top it may be of any other desirable contour without departure from my invention.

Pivotally connected to the pail-bottom A. upon its inner face and on opposite sides of the center adjacent to the flange b are the lower members F of hinges that have their upper members G likewise connected to the inner face of the pail-top, the Joint of each hinge being about midway of the length of the pail when the latter is in condition" for use, and by the extension of the hinges the pliable portion of the pail is made taut. The lower hinge-members F are provided with eyes g through which run flexible devices H connecting the pail-bottom and a transverse brace I, the'latter being in Jghe form of a hinge having the outer extremities of its members preferably of such shape as to straddle the aforesaid hinge-members, and ears h arranged in pairs on the brace serve as stops to prevent disengagement of the same from said hinge-members when the pail is collapsed inasmuch as these hinge-members fold down between the stops.

Connecting the central portion of the brace with the pail-bottom is a spring .I expanded incidental to the elevation of said brace (when the hinges that join the bottom and top of the pail are straightened out) to thereby exert power sufficient to prevent buckling of the aforesaid brace underordinary circumstances.

The hinges formed by the members F, G, are of a triiie less length than a measure ment equal to the diameter of the pail in order that they may close and abut against each other within the limits of said pail and to effeet this result it is necessary to first pull up the center of the brace I against the power of the spring J thereby permitting said hinge members to swing inward on their pivots. As the hinges close up, the retraction of the spring will cause the brace to run down the necessary distance and the pliable portion of the pail-wall being properly tucked in, the top of my device will close on the bottom thereof.

2. A collapsible pail comprising a bottom and top ot' suitable non-pliable material, the top having a hinged section and means for holding the same in a closed position, an endless web of suitable pliable material intermediate of the top and bottom, hinges connecting said top and bottom, and suitable means for maintaining the hinges in extended position, substantially as set forth.

3. A collapsible pail comprising bottom and top sections of suitable nonpliable material, an intermediate endless web of suitable pliable material, hinges connecting the bottom and top sections, a jointed spring-controlled brace having its extremities of such form as to loosely engage with the lower-hinge-members, guides on the lower hinge-members, and exible devices that work loose in the guides,

and connect with the brace and pail-bottom, substantially as set forth.

4. A collapsible pail comprising bottom and top sections of suitable non-pliable material, an intermediate endless web of suitable pliable material, hinges connecting the bottom and top sections, a jointed spring-controlled brace having its extremities of such form as to loosely engage with the lower hinge-members, guides on these lower hinge-members iiexible devices that work loose in the guides and connect with the brace and pail-bottom, a spring that also connects said brace and pail-bottom, and ears at opposite sides ofthe brace members adjacent to their extremities, ,substantially as set forth.
