SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,253, dated. January 23, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ADNA D. WARNER, of Naugatuck, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Clasps for Use on Boot- Trees in the Manufacture of Rubber Boots, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of my invention are case and In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my clasp; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation on the line 2, 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, aside view.

a is the frame which is preferably composed of cast malleable metal. It contains a central opening b extending all the way through from top to bottom.

a c are upwardly facing shoulders at each end of the opening.

d is a horizontal groove extending transversely across each side of the frame. At one side of each groove is an upwardly extending lug e which is cast integral with the frame in the vertical position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. 0n the opposite side of each groove is a rabbet fin which the end of the lug e lies when bent downward in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, so that its upper surface is flush with the upper surface of the frame. Behind each of the lugs e is a notch g which also facilitates the bending of the lug h is a spring. The forward part of the frame contains a hole at l to receive the nose It and above this hole the frame is recessed to receive the latch t flush with the top of the frame, the trunnions being adapted to fit in the grooves d.

After the frame and latch are cast separately, the spring his placed from above onto the shoulders c 0'. Then the latch is placed in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and the lugs e are bent downward so as to inclose the trunnions within the grooves d. The latch being provided with a projecting heel m, the spring it will have a tendency to retain it either in the position shown in dotted lines or in that shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The contour of the frame may be of any desired design and the clasp may be secured to the boot-tree in any ordinary manner. The felt or boot lining to be held is placed on the surface of the frame when the latch is turned up; and upon turning the latch down again, it is pinched between the latch and the frame and a secure hold is insured by the nose It.

I am aware of Letters Patent No. 474,537 to E. J. Steele and No. 176,848 to C..A. Ensign and I make no claim to that which is described in either of said patents.

Iclaim- In a boot tree clasp, the frame having the longitudinal latch recess, the upwardly opening transverse trunnion grooves, the lugs projecting from the side of the same and bent so as to inclose the trunnions within the grooves and the spring seat below the level of the grooves, in combination with the latch and spring, all arranged substantially as described; whereby, in assembling the parts, the

spring may first be inserted from the top, then the latch and then the lugs bent downward over the trunnions of the latch, as set forth.
