UNiTsn STATES PATENT ANDREWJ; ROBINSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DETAC HAB LE U NIBRELLA-COVEF'I.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,905, dated January 16, 1894.
Application filed January 16, 1893. Serial No. 458,524. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. ROBINSON, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Detachable Umbrella-Covers, of which the following description, in connection with the ac-` companying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide xo a detachable umbrella cover with a water excluding collar or cap, made yielding or' expansible to be self-conforming to the stick,
and preferably detachably connected with said cover, whereby it may be removed with the cover or independently.
In accordance with this invention the water excluding collar or cap is mounted upon, and connected with the ferrule, which is secured to the cover so that said collar or cap is indizo rectly connected to the cover. This collar or cap is herein shown as made tapering toward its upper end, while connection is made with the cover at its lower end, and when so made `it also serves as a iinishing collar or cap. 2 5 The drawing shows in vertical section the central portion of a detachable umbrella cover having a water-excluding and finishing collar or cap, detachably connected with it.
The stick a, notch b, ribs c and cover d,
3o provided with any suitable means at the edge,
not shown, to secure it to the ends of the ribs.
are all as usual.
The cover is herein shown as connected with or attached to a ring e, or ferrule made 3 5 large enough in diameter to receive all sizes of sticks, said ring being grooved circumferentially to receive a cord or other means employed for connecting the cover to the ring.
The water-excluding collar or cap f is made of rubber or other material, and is adapted to yield to snugly fit the sticks of varying diameters, being self-conforming thereto, and at the lower edge of said cllar or cap an inturned lip or flange f is formed which is sprung into the circumferential groove in the ring e, which thereby serves as a means of retaining said collar or cap in position, preventing it from rising up on the stick. This water-excluding collar or cap is independently 5c detachable, or is removable with the cover,
and it is made tapering toward its upper end, and being superimposed upon the ferrule is thereby exposed and serves as a nishing collar or cap, as well as having the function of excluding water. By its connection with the 5`5 ferrule or ring e, as herein shown` or other- Wise, said ferrule or ring is concealed, yet serving as a seat or support for said collar or cap. This manner of retaining the yielding or expansiblev Water-excluding collar `or cap 6ov in position, either when exposed, or when serving as a finishing cap, is simple and preferable, yet itis obvious that it may be retained in other ways, so as to prevent it from rising on the stick, yet be removable with the cover, which I deem comes Within the spirit and scope of this invention.
I claim- 1. In a detachable cover, the combination of the entirely external yielding or expansilo ble Water excluding and finishing collar or cap, with means provided on said cover to removably engage and hold the collar or cap in place.
2. .A detachable cover having a. non expansible ferrule at its central or stick receiving opening sufficiently large in diameter to receive different sized sticks, to which ferrule the cover is detachably connected and a yielding or expansible water excluding collar 8o ,or cap mounted upon and detachably connected with said ferrule to tightly grasp the stick beyond the ferrule, substantially as de-l scribed. l
3. A detachable cover having a ferrule at its central orstick receiving opening sufficiently large in diameter to receive different sized sticks, and a yielding or expansible water excluding finishing collar or cap the lower end of which embraces said ferrule, substan- 9o tially as described.
4. The combination of the cover d, stick receiving ferrnle at its central opening large enough in diameter to receive theidifterent sized sticks, and an external yielding water 95. excluding and `iinishing cap made tapering toward its upper end and at its lower end embracing the ferrule, said parts being connect-ed together to be removedas an entirety, substantially as described. roo
5. A detachable cover having a ferrule at In testimony whereof I have signed my its central or stick receiving opening large naine to this specification in the presence of lo enogh in diameter to receive the differenttwo subscribing Witnesses. size sticks, and a yielding or expansible Way 5 ter-excluding collar or cap having" an in- ANDREW J' ROBINbON' turned retaining lip or fiange to engage a Witnesses: ange on the ferrule, substantially as de- BERNICE J. NOYES, scribed. F. C. NoYEs.
