To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM 1-1. SYTHEs, of Boston, in. the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention has relation to garment holders and supporters generally, and is particularly adapted for use in supporting stockings, leggins, &c.

It is the object of the invention to provide a garment holder and supporter which may be readily and quickly attached to and released from the garment, hold the garment securely when attached, and have no liability of tearing or otherwise injuring the goods by reason of its connection therewith or hold thereon.

To these ends the invention consists of a garment clasp or holder and support consisting of a base plate provided with a button having an oval or elongated head horizontally arranged, and a locking plate provided with an oval or elongated eye or slot vertically arranged each plate having independent straps connected therewith, so that aportion of the garment may be placed over the head of the button, and the locking plate turned at a right angle to its normal position and pressed down thereon with the result of passing the head of the button with the cloth of the garment thereover through the eye of the locking plate, in such manner that when the latter assumes its normal position or a position parallel with the base plate the two plates will be buttoned or locked together and the garment held securely between the same and over the head and around the neck of the button, all as I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Reference is to behad to the annexed drawings and to the letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

Of the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment holder and supporter complete, constructed in accordance with my invention, one strap equipped with my improvements being shown as attached to a garment which may be supposed to be a stocking and the other strap being shown with the plates separated. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view taken on theline 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3is a sectional detail View taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 at a right angle to the line on which Fig. 2 is taken.

designates a locking plate or part which may be attached to the lower end of a supplemental slack or quite elastic strap 9 connected at its other end with the main strap a, and provided with an elongated or oval eye g vertically arranged, so that by placing a portion of a garment h over the head of the button, turning the lockin g plate f to a position at right angles to the base plate, as shown at the left in Fig. 1, and passing the head of the button through the said eye 9 and then allowing the two plates to assume normal position as shown at the right in Fig. 1, the button with the fabric thereover will become securely locked and held over the head and around the neck of the button, so that the fabric of the garment cannot be detached from the holder by strain or tension thereon, and yet so as not to tear or otherwise damage the fabric.

It will be observed that, when the supporter is in use, supplemental strap g, by reason of its elasticity, will tend to hold the locking-plate f lengthwise with respect to the base-plate c, and thereby maintain the transverse relation of the button-head and slot.

If desired, one of the plates, as the base and the main strap a is taut, the

plate, may be provided with a lug or projection 2' and the other with a corresponding depression j on their opposing faces so that when brought into normal position they may become locked together, but this provision for most cases, is unnecessary.

It is obvious that the straps may be attached to the plates or parts 0 and f at any point and in any Way that may be considered most advantageous and as will best subserve the purpose of the invention. It is also to be observed that the head of the button may be elongated vertically and the slot or eye 9 may exteudlaterally; and furthermore that the position in which thedevice is used does not effect the invention, the terms vertically, laterally, 650., being herein employed simply for the purpose of clearness of description.

With this invention it will be seen that the clasp or holder may be readily and easily attached to and detached from a garment, and when the latter is engaged by the invention it will be most securely held.

Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a Way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that What is claimed is- 1. A garment clasp or holder and support comprising inits construction a flat base plate or holder provided with a button having an oval or elongated head, horizontally ar' ranged and a reduced shank, and a flat looking plate provided with an oval or elongated eye, vertically arranged, each plate having an independent strap connected with its upper end, as set forth.

2. A garment clasp orholder comprising in its construction a separate flat base plate provided with an elongated button having a reduced shank and a separate flatlocking plate provided with an elongated eye said button and eye being when in use at a right angle to each other, and means for securingthe plates to the supporting straps, as set forth.
