Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE0 THOMAS SYMONDS, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVED TOE-CALK.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 5l ,242, dated November 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SYMoNDs, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and Iniproved Toe-Galli; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitieation, in which- Figure l represents a perspective of my invention; Fig. 2, a section of the same.
The object of nIy invention is to produce a calk for the ball or forward portion of the foot, to prevent slipping when the heel in Walking is raised from the ground, or in Walking up an ascent.
My invention consists of a bar or plate to be placed under the sole of the boot or shoe, and having upon its under surface four points or barbs and upon its upper surface two small projecting points. At either end the bar is furnished with a ring. Into these rings is fastened an elastic band.
The bar or plate is shown at A, the barbs at e, the rings at C, the band at B, and the projecting points at d, in the accompanying drawings. The points c serve as foot-holds, the points d to keep the device inimovably fixed to the sole, and the band B passes over the top of the boot or shoe as a means of securing the call; in its position. The ends of the plate are turned up so as to form the shoulders f, in order to operate as a further security to the device when in use.
rlhe calk is drawn over the toe of the boot or shoe to such place on the foot as is desired. by stretching the elastic band itcan heady usted to any portion ot the foot forward of the heel. The Weight of the person will drive the points d into the sole, and so hold the calli, together with the baud, Where it is placed. The calk can be easily removed by stretching the elastic band sufficient to remove the points d from the sole.
I construct the plate, barbs, and rings of any proper metal, and the band of rubber or rubber cloth.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is e The combination of the plate A, the band B, the rings C, the barbs e, the points d, and the shoulders f, as and for the purposes described.
THOMAS SYMONDS.
