SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,290, dated January 9, 1894. Application filed May 5, 1892. Serial No. $313 N 11105913 To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, HENRY L. GREEN and OASSIUS H. GREEN, citizens of the United States, and residents of near West Mansfield, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Halter, of which the following is a specification.

O ur device is an improvement in halters.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the side of the halter having the throatelatch snap hook; Fig. 2, a similar view of the other side of the halter.

Our halter is made with two ropes A and A, head bands A brow band A and nose band A; the rope A, passing under the chin and up over the nose band at B, to the point 0 where it is doubled to form a loop, the rope being secured to the nose band by staples K and 1.. It is then interlaced to the point D, whence it passes back around the head band through staples H, N, N and 1-1 to the front again, at a point E, opposite the loop 0, where it is again braided or interlaced on itself again, and passes thence through loop 0, to the point F, where'the end is braided in with the rope A, at the point G, forming the large loop Q. A is a smaller rope attached to the main rope ofthe halter, by a small staple H, or similar fastening, and thence passes forward to, and over the nose-band, being attached to it by the staples I, K, and thence passes back along the head band to and over the brow band at L and thence down around under the throat, forming a throat latch the rope being fastened by the staples H, N, N and H. A snap hook M is attached to the head band at N, and a ring 0 on the loose end of the throat latch engages with the same to serve as a fastening. The end of the throat latch is attached to the ring 0 by two half hitches or an artificers knot, or other suitable knot, the free end hanging down, and allowing a person to shorten or lengthen the throat latch by means of shiftingthe hitch in the ring.

P is a flannel, felt or other soft lining stitched on the halter to prevent the rope rubbing the horse. The smaller rope A passing over the nose band prevents the same from slipping down on the nose of the horse, and the loop 0 is free to'play on the rope beneath the chin for several inches to accommodate the halter to heads of different sizes, but it can never slip up farther than the point of interlacing of the rope.

Our halter consists of the rope A, forming the main part, and the rope A forming the support for the nose piece, the brow band and the throat latch. By this arrangement the nose band cannot slip down, and the loop under the chin cannot slip up so far as to choke the horse, should anything occur to allow the horse to get his nose out of the nose band.

'The piece supporting the nose band may be of wire to strengthen and stiffen the nose band, if desired.

What we claim is 1. A halter comprising a head-band, a noseband, a brow-band, and a rope, secured by suitable fastenings to the bands, having a loop at one side of the nose-band and an end for leading extending through the loop from the other side of the nose-band; substantially as described.

2. A halter comprising a headband, a browband, a nose-band, a rope extending around the nose-band-aud over the head-band, formed with a loop through which it is passed, a rope extendingfrom one side of the head-band to the nose-band along the other side of the head-band around the brow-band, means by which the brow-band portion is connected, and suitable fastenings for securing the ropes to the bands; substantially as described.
