STAPLE-FORCEPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,248, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed August 3, 1893. Serial No. 482253. (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN LORD GRIF- FITH, of Ohardon, in the county of Geauga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Staple-Forceps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide new and improved staple forceps which are simple and durable in construction, and arranged to enable the operator to quickly and conveniently remove staples from posts or other parts into which they were driven.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the rear part of one of the jaws; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upper end of the lever.
The improved staple forceps are provided with a straight handle A formed at one end with a head B carrying'the pivot bolts 0 and O on which are mounted toturn the gripping jaws D and D respectively, provided with the gripping ends D and D preferably made in the shape of hooks so as to readily close around the middle or bent portion of the staple to be extracted. The two jaws D and D are pressed apart at their gripping ends by a spring E interposed between the two jaws iprward of their pivots, as plainly shown in The rear ends D and D of the jaws Dand D are beveled as plainly indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, and the bevels are adapted to be engaged by a double wedge F formed on a lever F extending through a slot B in the hub B, the said lever being fulcrumed on a bolt G, attached to the said head. In order to relieve the pivots C and C, as much as possible of strain, 1 form the inner faces of the jaws with circular offsets D engaging corresponding circular recesses 13 formed in the top of the head B, as shown in Fig. 3.
The operation is as follows: When the tool is not used, the spring E holds the forward gripping ends of the jaws apart, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and when it is desired to use the device, the operator places the downwardly-extending end of the lever F against the post or other part containing the staple to be extracted, so that the gripping ends D and D of the jaws D and D are on opposite sides of the staple. The operator then bears down on the handle A so that the lever F is caused to swing and presses with its wedge F on the two bevels D and D of the jaws D and D to force the rear ends of the jaws apart and the gripping ends D and D shut under the bend of the staple, as illustrated in Fig. 1. On the further bearing on the handle A on the part of the operator, the said handle swings with the lower end of the lever F, as the fulcrum, and thus pulls out the staple securely held in the closed gripping ends D and D of the jaws D and D. As soon as the operator has pulled the staple completely out of its seat and removes the device from the post, then the gripping jaws automatically open by the action of the spring E to permit the staple to drop out of the gripping ends D and D It will be seen that by the arrangement described the lever F has the double function of opening the jaws D and D, and also forms a fulcrum for the handle A after thegripping jaws have been closed, as before explained.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- 1. Staple forceps, comprising ahandle, jaws pivoted thereon, and a lever fulcrumed on the handle and adapted to engage the said jaws, the jaws and the lever being arranged to move in planes that are essentially at right angles to each other, substantially as described.
2. Staple forceps comprising a handle, opposing jaws independently pivoted thereon, and a lever fulcrumed on the handle and adapted to engage each of the jaws in the rear of its pivot, substantially as described.
3. Staple forceps, comprising a handle, jaws separately pivoted on the said handle and formed at their forward ends with gripping hooks and at their rear ends with bevels, and a lever pivoted on the said handle and formed at one end with a double wedge adapted to engage the said bevels of the jaws, substantially as shown and described.
4. Staple forceps, comprisinga handle, jaws pivoted on the said handle and formed at their forward ends with gripping hooks and at their rear ends with bevels, a lever pivoted on the said handle and formed at one end with a double Wedge adapted-to engage the said bevels of the jaws the pivot of the lever being arrangedessentially at right angles to the plane IO in which the" jaws are adapted to move, and a spring for normally pressing the front ends of the jaws apart, substantially as shown and described.
