SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,646, dated December 26,1893.
Application filed December 12, 1892. Serial No. 454,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LJosnrn OBYRNE, a citicen of theUnited States, residing at Chicago, 1n the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Vertical Trap for Sinks, Vashbowls, Bath- Tnbs, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in traps for sinks, wash-bowls, bath-tubs, &c., and the objects of my invention are, first, to prevent, by means of an automatic or selfclosing valve, the escape of sewer gas into the apartment in which the sink, bowl, or tub is situated; second, to disinfect the waste pipe, and destroy the disease germs engendered therein by marsh or sewer gas. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawingsin which- Figurel is a perspective view of the entire trap; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the entire trap, showing the various parts in position; Fig. 3, a section in perspective of the hollow ring for, holding the disinfectant; and Fig. i, the bottom of said ring, showing the screws by which it is attached to the upper portion of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The trap is composed of three parts, the cylinder B of glass or other suitable material; the cover for the same A, containing a chamher for holding camphor or other disinfectant, and the mechanism for operating the automatic valve f; and the lower portion of the trap designated by the letter O, containing the automatic gate-valve.
E is a hollow ring, designed to contain a disinfectant, and placed in the cylinder B, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This ring is shown in detail in Figs. 8 and 4, the slots to allow the water to percolate the disinfectant being designated bythe letter h in said figures, and the screws by which the bottom portion of said ring is attached to the top being designated by the letter g.
The automatic valve consists of a ball f, capable of turning on its axis (1, and is held in position at the end of the flush tube by means of the spring 3 operating upon the piston rods c-o, said spring being coiled around the flush tube in the spring box 17, which is hermetically closed by means of the cap o'. The spring 5 is so adjusted as to sustain from three to four ounces of water in the flush tube. The valve is opened by means of the water running through the flush tube, and is closed by the pressure of the spring .9 when the weight of waterin said tube falls to three or four ounces. 7
The dotted lines in Fig. 2 show the ball valve f and also the gate-valve 6 open. This latter valve also acts automatically closing by its own weight after the passage of the water. I am aware that there is no novelty in the use of this gate-valve e, and make no claim therefor, except as part of my trap.
The space a in the cover A, Fig. 2 may be used as a chamber for holding disinfectants to destroy the odors arising from decaying wood, &c., in the sink-box.
The various parts of the trap are connected with each other by means of the screw threads on each, shown in the accompanying drawings, and together form an effective trap for the prevention of the escape-of sewer gas,
and which may be connected at its upper end by means of couplings to the sink or washbowl, and at its lower, by the same means to the waste-pipe.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vertical trap, the combination, with a cylindrical case or tube, of a horizontally rotatable spherical valve, suitably balanced and maintained at the lower end of the said tube bymeans of a single spring balance coiled around said tube, a hollow ring for holding disinfectants, and a vertical gatevalve, all inclosed in an air-tight chamber, substantially as described.
2. A sanitary vertical trap consisting of an air-tight chamber containing the automatic valve hereinbefore described, a hollow slotted ring for holding disinfectants, and a lower gate-valve substantially as described.
3.
