UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE..
OLIVER H. KEEP, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
WASTE-PIPE FOR WASH-BASINS, BATH-TUBS, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,373, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed November 13, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, OLIvEE H. KEEP, of New York city, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in faste-Pipes for Vash-Basins, Bath-Tubs, Src.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the parts. of my device separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a like View of the same united, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section upon a central line.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
In the use of wash-basins, bath-tubs, and other like articles much (lifculty has heretofore been experienced in keeping the strainer of the waste-pipe free from obstructions, said strainer being iixed within and a part of such pipe.
To remedy this diiiiculty is the design of my invention, which invention consists, as an improvement in waste-pipes for washbasins, bath-tubs, 85e., in a detachable strainer fitted within the mouth of the waste-pipe and adapted to receive and contain a stopplug, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
The use of myinvention will be sufficiently ,having the usual construction and provided at its lower end with a round opening, a, that has its upper end enlarged to form a recess, a'.
Fitted within the opening a is a waste-pipe, B, that at its upper end has a peripheral enlargement or collar, I), which corresponds to and fills the recess a', the said upper end of said waste-pipe being thus flush with the inner surface of said bowl at such point. The interior of the waste-pipe B has the usual round form, and at its upper end is provided with an annular recess, b', similar to the recess a of the basin A. Fitted within said waste-pipe is a cylindrical cup, C, that at its upper end is provided with a peripheral enlargement, c, which at its outer side fills said recess b and at its inner side forms a shoulder, c', that is preferably slightly undercut, as shown in Fig. 8, while at its lower end said cup is inclosed by an open-work or reticulated plate, ci. The strainer-eup O is preferably held in place within the pipe B by friction and weight, but may, if desired, be more securely fastened by peripheral locking-lugs, a bayonet-joi1it, or any usual means for fastening together similar' parts. The inner periphery of the enlargement c has an upward andoutward flare, which adapts it to receive an ordinary basin-plug, D, for the purpose of closing saidpipe and preventing the escape of the liquid contents of the bowl A. As thus arranged, when the strainer O has become sufficiently clogged to prevent the free passage ofwater, it can be readily removed by inserting a nger beneath the shoulder c and raising said strainer upward, after which any obstruction found may be easily removed and said strainer quickly replaced. The ease and rapidity with which said strainer may be removed, cleaned, and replaced renders practicable the use of much ner meshes than would otherwise be safe, by which means the obstruction of the waste-pipe at bends or at` other points is much less likely to occur than would be the case were larger pieces of food or other substances' permitted to pass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination withthe waste-pipe of a basin or tub rabbeted within or having an enlargement of its bore at its upper end, the strainer-cup fitting within the bore of the pipe, provided at its upper end with a collar or enlargement fitting the rabbet in the waste-pipe, and having the upper end of its bore adapted to receive a stop-plug, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the waste-pipe of a basin or tub rabbeted at its upper end, substantially as shown, the strainer-cup provided at its upper end with an annular enlarge ment to fit the rabbet in the waste-pipe, and having a rib or collar within its upper end, and the stopplug fitting into and supported by the cup, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of October, 1884,
OB H. KEEP.
