HORSE-CHECKING DEVICE.

Be it known that LCORRY ROYS, a-subject4 of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Chi# cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful lmprove mentin Horse-Checking Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of devices, known as checks, for use in controlling the position of the head of a' horse while trotting.

The object of my invention is to provide a check-device which shall, in a humane manner, serve to hold the animals mouth closed while trotting, thus insuring breathing through the nostrils, and to so construct the check for holding closed' the mouth that it will tend to force the animals nose outward and thus prevent him from drawing the chin inward in the common attempt of the animal to get the bit against or between the back teeth; a further function of the device heilig to aord a rest for the animals head by supporting it at or near thechin from the point, as the saddle, to which the check-rein, passing over the head, is fastened.

My improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows it by a perspective viewin position on a horse; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the frame of the check-device.

` A is a rigid frame, formed of any suitable material, but preferably of aluminum, and comprising the yoke fr, the legs r and r2 of which conform more or less to the transverse contour of the animals face, midway, or thereabout, between the nostrils and eyes, and snugly lit in place as means for steadying the device in its position; from the saddle-portion r3 of the yoke there projects forward an arm p to extend along the bridge of the face short of the nostrils, behind which it branches into fingers p and 102 to flank the upper jaw; and from the yoke-saddle there projects perpendicularly outward a horn o. The frame thus described is covered, as with leather, terminating in loops n at the extremities of the yoke-legs, through which loops pass the cheek-straps n', and at the extremities of the ngers 1o and pin fasteners,-as

buckles m, at which to fasten the opposite ends of a cushion or roll B, or any suitable strap adapted to passunder the lower jaw of the animal near the chin; vand the horn-covering terminates in the (preferably double) check rein C, which passes, preferably, through the crown-portion of the bridle, over theanimals head to the saddle (not shown) at which it is fastened.

As will be seen, the comparatively great leverage affordedby the horn o causes the fastened check-rein to tend the better and more readily to force the Vnose of the animal, while trotting,into a straight-ahead position and to draw on the roll B in a manner to cause it to hold the lower jawshut and also support the head near the forward end of the vj aw. It will alsobe apparent that the checkdevice prevents the animal from drawing the chin inward, or toward the neck, thus preventing him from getting the bit against or ,between the back teeth, whereby the bit may always be pulled against the fleshy parts of' the mouth, thus facilitating the control of the driver over the animal.

The exact construction shown and described of my improved device is believed to adapt it to best answer its purpose, though it may be variously modified without thereby too materially impairing it for the performance of any or all of its functions. Hence I do not limit it to the exact construction set forth except in such of the appended claims ssk the terms of which manifest intention so to do.

What Iclairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A check-device formed with a frame to seat on ahorses face and having a horn-extending outward from the frame and lingers fingers passing under the lower jaw, sub

stantially as described.

2:/ A check-device comprising a frame 4to seat on a horses face and having al yoke to straddle the face, an arm projecting from the yoke and terminating in fingers to straddle the face in advance of the yoke, and a horn projecting outward from the yoke, a checkrein fastenedto the horn, loops atthe ends of the yoke-legis, andl a strep supported on said fingers; no pass` under the lower jaw, substantially as described.

3. A check-device comprising a frame A to sent on a horses face and having a yoke o provided with legs 7" and T2, an arm p having branches 1J and p2, endl af horn o projecting perpendeulerly from the saddle-portion of the yoke, a covering on the frame terminadaing ab the horn in a check-rein, atlthe' yokelegsiin loopsv :und at the fingers#4 iin' faseners, and a cushion B secured at its opposite ends to the seid fasteners, substantially as described.
