` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`HARRY WALTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T() GEORGE W. TEUFEL, OF SAME PLACE.
DENTAL FORCEPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,067, dated December 19, 1893.
Application tiled March 23. 1893- Serial No. 467i305. (No model.)
Tooll whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental Forceps for Veterinary Purposes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of dental forceps for veterinayy purposes, having a fulcrum plate connected with the axis of the jaws, said plate being formed of an arm which is secured at its inner end to the jaws of the forceps at the axis thereof, and a shoe connected with the outer end of said arm, the inner end of the arm having a bearing against the portion of the jaws in front of said axis, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l represents a perspective view of veterinary dental forceps embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section of a portion on line an, fr, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of lreference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a pair of' dental forceps for veterinary purposes.
B designates the axis or axial piu of the jaws or beaks, and C designates an arm which is connected with said axis and extends forward between said jaws, and has fitted to its outer end, in an eye thereon, the screw stem D, to which is connected the shoe E, it being seen that by screwing the stem D in proper direction, the shoe E may be set nearer to or `farther from the arm C, and thus adjusted according to requirements. Y
The portion C of the arm C between the screw F, and thejaws or beaks of the forceps bear against the side of the portion of the forceps about or around the axis, so as to provide a firm bearing for the arm against said portion, and thus increase the durability of the axial portion of said arm.
The ends of the shoe are hanged so as to prevent the same from `lateral displacement from the tooth on which it is supported.
The operation is as follows: The shoe is placed upon the crown or face of a proper tooth, while the jaws or beaks are presented to the tooth to be extracted, said shoe thus' providing a fnlcrum bywhich the forceps may be operated in a convenient and power ful manner. It will be furthermore seen, that the arm or bar C passes freely between, the beaks or jaws without interfering with the operation of the latter. The aXisB of the jaws is hollow, and receives a screw F, by which the arm C is connected with the forceps, it being evident thatvwhen said screw is removed, the arm C and lparts carried by the same, are disconnected from the forceps, and
the latter may be used without the fulcrum` attachment, as they are left intact and unaffected by such displacement. When the arm is properly located, the screw may be applied, thus connecting the former with the forceps, it being evident that the arxn may turn on the screw F as its axis, and the shoe E may also turn on said arm C, thus permitting the adjustment of the forceps to the tooth to be extracted, while the shoe rests upon the face or crown of the proper tooth as a bearing.
It will be noticed that by 4having thearm C extended in front of the jaws, the said arm with the shoe thereinis not in the way of the handle in operating the device, and also that a bearing is obtained at a distance from the tooth operated on, giving thereby more freedom or ease in handling the forceps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- 1. A dental forceps consisting of pivoted jaws, a forwardly projecting arm the axial pin connecting said arm with said jaws, and a shoe having a stem which is fitted in an eye in the outer end of said arm, the inner end of said arm resting against part of the forceps in front of the axis thereof, substantially as described.
2. Forceps having an arm, and a fulcrurn shoe with a stem on its back secured thereto, said arm projecting forwardly between the beaks thereof, and having its inner end resting against part of the forceps, substantially as described.
3. A dental forceps having a hollow axial pin, an arm adj ustably secured to said pin, and a fnlcrum shoe secured to said arm, said parts being combined substantiallly as described.
HARRY lVALTER.
