SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,771, dated December 12, 1893. I Application filed August 31, 1893- Serial No. 484,461. (No model-)- To all whom it concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY l3. BURNS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at- Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others IO skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to improvements in attachments for sewing-machines, the same being designed for sharpening needles and scissors; and it consists in a sewing-machine attachment comprising a two-part shaft, one part of which carries a notched or recessed disk near one end, the parts being connected to each other by a cylindrical block of emery or other grinding material, the attachment being adapted to be placed upon the bobbin- 2 5 winder of a sewing machine and rotated thereon to sharpen either needles, scissors or other implements.

A designates a cylinder of emery which is provided centrally with an aperture a and on 5 its circumference with a recess or groove a. B designates a shaft which is made up of two parts or sections 6 and b, the outer end of each part being tapered as is usual with the bobbins 0f sewing-machines. The parts b and b are flattened on one side and keys 0 c are employed for securing the shafts in the cylindrical block of emery so as to prevent the rotation of said block on the shaft and at the same time provide means for lengthening and shortening the shaft so as to adapt the device for use with sewing-machines having bobbins of different lengths.
D designates a notched disk which is rigidly attached to the part b of the shaft and is adapted to engage with the shaft of the bobbin-Winder having a disk which impinges against the balance-wheel of the sewing-machine in the usual manner.
The sharpening device hereinbefore described is simple in construction, and in use when it is desired to sharpen a needle the point is placed in the recess in the circumference of the emery block, while scissors or other' implements having cutting edges are sharp ened by being placed against the surface of the block to one side of the recess.
I do not care to limit my invention exclusively to the use of key wedges for connecting the parts of the shaft to the emery block, as devices may be employed which will serve the same purpose Without materially departing from my invention; but as there are so many different styles of sewing-machines which vary as to the length of the bobbin I consider the extensible shaft an important 70.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An attachment for sewing-machines comprising a grinding cylinder having a central aperture anda recess in its circumference, a two-part shaft B, one of the parts carrying a notched disk D, and wedge-shaped keys 0 which are adapted to engage with the parts of the shaft and with the grinding-block to hold the parts against movement and permit an egrtension of the shaft, for the purpose set ort In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 8 5 presence of two witnesses.
