Description

(No Model.) T. M. PIERCE.
FIREWORKS TORCH.
Patented Dec. 12, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
THOMAS M. PIERCE, OF CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
FIREWORKS=TORCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 510,440, dated December 12, 1893- Application filed March 15, 1893. Serial No.466,081. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. PIERCE, of Concord, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireworks- Torches or Signal-Fuses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to fireworks torches or signal fusees more particularly intended for use for railroad signal fusees, and the invention consists of a fireworks torch or signal fusee constructed and arranged for operation all substantially as hereinafter fully described reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents in side view and partial central vertical section the upper end of a fireworks torch constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 22 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a similar view to Fig.1 showing another form. Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 44 Fig. 3.
In the drawings A represents the upper end of a casing of a fireworks torch or signal fusee, B the fireworks composition, 0 the priming, and -D the fuse all constructed and arranged for operation as usual and needing no more particular description herein except as relates to the present invention.
E is a tube or cover made of paper or of any suitable material which is adapted to freely fit over the upper end of the casing but to closely fit an enlargement or rib F on the outer side of the casing at its upper end, which enlargement consists of a preferably narrow ring, or rim of paper or other suitable material secured to the casing in any suitable manner, and having on its outer side at intervals regular, or otherwise vertical grooves, serrations or spaces H, as shown in section in Fig. 2 more particularly.
In the upper end of the cover tube E is secured a plugJ of wood or of any suitable material having a shoulder K which bears and rests against the upper end L of the tube or cover. The inner end of the plug is hollowed out or concave as at M, and when the cover with its plug are in place on the upper end of the torch as shown, the end Nof the plug rests against and on the upper end P of the casing allowing the fuse to extend up into the space M, for the plug not to touch the same.
Generally in making the cover for the up- 7 per end of the casing it is preferable to have it of considerable length, but if it fits closely to the casing as it should do its full length, it is dilficult to place it on the casing on account of the confined air therein, or to remove it therefrom on account of closeness of the fit; this invention obviates these difiiculties, for by enlarging the upper end of the casing a short distance having grooves or serrations on its outer edge, and having the cover only fit closely this enlargement, which is sufficient to securely hold it in place, it being free of the casing below, as shown in Fig. 1, and having the corrugations or grooves or space for the escape of air when placing it on the fusee the cover can be easily put in place and held securely thereon and as easily removed.
In lieu of making a special rim or rib and securing it to the case it can be arranged as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which P is a paper or cloth cap, on top of the casing its edges Q bentover and secured by paste or cement to the sides of the case and in such securing made to lap over at intervals as at R leaving between the extra thickness or laps spaces S for the air, and the cover fitting closely the lapped over or thickened portions of the cap.
This invention provides a very simple cover for the casing that is safe from accidental escape, in transportation, and yet can be readily put in place and removed as is obvious. The cover can be made in any manner as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a fireworks torch or signal fusee, a casing for the fireworks composition, its upper end enlarged on its outer side, said enlargement having grooves, serrations or spaces on its outer surface, and a cover to the casing fitting said enlargement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS M. PIERCE.
Witnesses EDWIN W. BROWN, LEONA O. ARNO.
