DELIVERY-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,212, dated December 5, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HORACE S. TUTHILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, New York county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Delivery-Box, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is more particularly designed for use in connection with houses, apartments, flats, 850., Where it is desired to provide some means whereby the milkman, baker, newspaper man or other tradesman may have his goods delivered in a conveniently accessible place without on the one hand disturbing his customers, as for instance in the early morning hours, and on the other hand without leaving the goods in a place where they are liable to be stolen.

The object of my invention then is to construct a simple and convenient delivery box for the purpose described and which will also be itself portable but be so constructed that neither it nor its contents can be carried oif except by authorized persons.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved delivery box with the door thereof open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the box and the door or other support to which the box is attached.

Referring to the'figures, the box A has in its back or one side two or more openings a made just large enough for the reception and passage of hooks b on the gate, door or other support B, upon which the delivery box is to be placed for convenient access of the delivery man. When the box A is placed against the gate or other support B, so that the hooks 12 pass through the openings a, the beveled ends of these hooks b will push the slide G up, (or the slide may be heldup from inside the box) un til the hooks have passed through the openings 0, when the slide 0 will fall down behind the hook part and lock the box to the gate or other support. Thus the box will be automatically locked to its support when placed in position Whether the door is open or not.

Therefore the box cannot be removed until the latch bar 0 is raised from the inside. Any convenient device may be used whereby this bar 0 can be raised from the front inner side of the box when the door is opened, such as a curved rod or lover a pass ing through a loop a on the under side of the top of the box. By pulling on the end 0 the bar 0 will be raised. The door D of the delivery box is locked by means of a latch E.

The delivery man as well as his customer has a key to open the door of the box, so that the delivery man can open the box, put his goods of the quantity desired into the box and lock it again, and so that later, Whenever it may be convenient, the customer can come and open the box, and either remove its contents or detach the box from its support and carry the box and its contents into the house. Inside the box, preferably on the cover, is a device for indicating to the delivery man how many articles are wanted, and for the delivery man to register each time the quantity left. Two disks m and m, Figs. 1 and 2, of paper or other suitable material are removably pivoted at m under a removable disk M, which cover has an opening m through it. Turn buttons (1 d serve to retain the disks in place. The disks m and m are marked off in sections, and at the outer edge of each section is a number. The numbers on the disk m which is of smaller diameter than the disk m may be used to representthe number or quantity of wares to be left, while those on the disk m may represent the date of the month. Before the box is put out by the housekeeper and locked to the support B the disks are turned so that the num ber of articles required, and the date show through the opening m This opening is preferably extended to the edge of the cover to allow the delivery man to pass a punch over the edge of the date card to punch or otherwise make a number corresponding to the number or quantity of articles left, on the disk m in the section containing the date. These disks m when removed serve as an account, the disks m being re= moved each month. A hole N may be made in the box through which a newspaper can be pushed, and wires '11, n, or similar protection provided to keep the newspaper in its place.

I claim as my invention- 1. A delivery lock box adapted to be secured to a door or othersupport with a lock orlatch therefor, arranged to automatically lock the box to its support when placed in position, and means concealed from the outside for operating the latch to detach the box from its support only when the box is open, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a door or other support provided with hooks, a box having openings through which the said hooks can pass, and a latch bar inside the box adapted to pass between the ends of the hooks and the wall of the box for the purpose set forth, and

accessible for operation only from the inside of the box, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a door or other support provided with hooks, a lock box having openings through which the said hooks can pass, and provided with a sliding bar having corresponding openings, through which also
