To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Emaonn A. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented cerain new and useful Improvements in Ticket- Vending Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ticket vending machines especially adapted for use in selling merchandise and other articles and also as an advertising medium to stimulate business, and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of the above stated character having a storage compartment with tickets arranged therein that are adapted to be fed to an examining compartment one at a time so that each ticket may be viewed or read prior to purchasing the same and said tickets being sold for the same amount and each bearing the name of an article of merchandise whereby certain articles can be purchased cheaper than the actual market value.

Another object of this invention is the provision of means for vending a ticket from the examining compartment and simultaneously placing another ticket therein from the storage compartment.

A further object of thisinvention is the provision of means for preventing the tickets from returning to the storage compartment from the examining compartment after once this invention is the provision of a ticket vending machine of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

Vi ith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety the easing of a vending machine having formed therein a plurality of vertically disposed storage compartments 2 having in communication with their lower ends examining compartments 3. The casing 1 consistso f abase 4;, side walls 5 and a rear wall 6. The upper edges of the side walls 5 are cut on an incline and the rear wall 6 has hinged to its upper edge a cover 7 that rests upon the inclined edges of said side walls 5. The forward portion of the side walls 5 have their upper edges disposed horizontally for supporting a removable cover or lid 8 which overlies the free edge of the cover 7 so that it is necessary to remove the lid 8 before the cove-r 7 can be swung to an open position on its chinges. A hasp 9 is secured to the lid 8 and receives the staple 10 secured to the cover 7 so that on placing a padlock through said staple the contents within the casing is sealed or locked from unauthorized persons. A partition 11 is mounted within th casing and has connected thereto a plurality of partitions 12 which form the storage compartments 2. The fronts of the storage compartments are closed by a transparent panel 13 which has its lower edge resting upon a member 14 located within the casing and its upper edge engaged by the-lid 8 so that said panel 13 is locked from removal from the casing when the lid and cover are in locked position. A plurality of slides are mounted within the casing 1 under each of the storage compartments 2 and have secured to their front ends finger grips 16 so that they may be readily pulled outwardly of the casing for vending the tickets 17 located within the storage compartments 2. A plurality of partitions 1''? having inclined'upper edges are secured to the member 1a and the casing 1 to form p u rality of examining compartments inalinement with the storage compartments and the examining compartments are closed by a transparent panel 18 so that the tickets after leaving the storage compartments can be viewed prior to purchasing them. The slides 15 are provided with recesses or pockets normally disposed under the storage compartments so that the lowermost "ticket of the series of tickets within said storage compartments seat within the pockets and move into the examining compartments on said slides being drawn outwardly of the casing. Catch members 19 are pivoted to the member 14: and located within the enamining compartments so that on tickets entering the examining compartments the catch members will drop behind said tickets and prevent them from returning to the storage compartments on the slides being shoved inwardly within the casing. When the slide is pulled outwardly, the tickets occupying positions within the examining compartments move outwardly of the easing so that they can be readily picked up by the purchaser while the adjacent ticket or next'ticket within the respective storage compartments moves into the res'pectiveexamining compartments. j r

A bracket 20 is secured to the rear wall 6 and supports a bell 21 of any desired construction adapted to be actuated by a member 22 pivotally and slidably connected to a rod 23. The rod 23 is substantially-U- shaped, has its ends journaled to the side walls 5 of the casing and is engaged by trips 24 secured to the slides so that said bell will be actuated upon any one of the slides being moved outwardly of the casing,

thereby providing means for attracting'the attention of the proprietor. Stops 25 are also secured to'the slides for abutting the partition 11 so as to limit the outward move-' partition 11 is provided with a plurality of vertical slotsto receive pins 27 carried by the followers and on which are journaled dcgs28. The dogs 28 are adapted to engage the teeth onrack bars 28. When the free to move downward and when it is desired to replenish the storage compartments vita tickets, the dogs are swung to a reverse position andwill lock the followers in elevated positions.

The bell 21 is preferably of the spring actuated type so that upon the slides being moved outwardly of the casing they will be automatically withdrawn into said casing when released by the spring in the bell, however, if desired independent springs may be connected to the slides and to the rear wall of the casing for returning the slides into said casing. a A red 29 is slidably mounted within the side walls of the casing under the examining compartments and also under the slides and is provided with a plurality of locking lugs 30 adapted to engage within recesses 31 formed inthe under face of the slides for locking said slides against outward movement. A suitable lock 82 is carried by the casing so that the rod can be positively locked against movement. By sliding the'rod in one direction, the locking lugs 30 are disengaged from the notches 31 thus freeing the slides so that they can be pulled outwardly of the casing and by moving the rod 29 in an opposite direction the slides are positively locked against movement.

The tickets as shown in Fig. 6 are provided with rounded corners so that they will readily pass from the storage compartments into the examining compartments on actuaition ofthe slides.

j in use the machine along with the articles of merchandise to be sold are placed on display in a store and the tickets within the machine bear the; names of the articles of merchandiseon display sothat when a purfchaser enters the store the machine is exfaminedor the tickets within the examining compartments are read and perhaps one of the tickets on display bears the name of the "article of merchandise the purchaser desires to purchase and if so'the purchaser draws the respective slide outwardly of'the casing sothat the respective ticket can be grasped. The purchaser then takes the ticket to the proprietor paying a stated sum as all tickets are of the same value and receives the article of merchandise that the respective ticket calls for. Perhaps this article of merchandise has a market value considerably greater than the amount paid for the ticket. If a person entering the store and after examining the tickets within the examining compartments and none of the tickets bear the name or" the article that the purchaser desires to purchase, the purchaser then can operate any one of the slides and remove the certain ticket therefrom and when this ticket is removed another ticket appears in the respective examining compartment and perhaps this ticket bears the name of the article of merchandise that the purchaser desires to purchase and if so the purchaser carries the two tickets to the proprietor paying the face value for each ticket and receiving the articles of merchandise. If the purchaser is not successful in obtaining the correct ticket on the second trial then he may try the third and fourth time or as "long as the purchaser may desire, paying the stated value for each ticket and receiv ing the article of merchandise stated on the tickets.

It will also be noted that the machine constructed in accordance with the foregoing description can be loaded with the tick ets at one point and sent to various stores and said tickets will be prevented from becoming displaced from any of the compartments owing to the followers and the finger grips on the slides will prevent the tickets within the examining compartments from sliding thereout until the slides are pulled outwardly of the casing and in this instance the slides can be locked by the locking rods. It is also to be noted that a person tampering with the machine cannot upset or disturb the tickets within the ma While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A ticket vending machine including a casing, storage and examining compartments in said casing and said examining compartment having an exit in its front wall, a slide extending through said compartments and normally having its forward end terminating in said exit, a finger grip secured to the forward end of the slide and normally closing the exit, said slide having a notch therein, a rod journaled in said casing, a lug carried by said rod and adapted to move into and out of the notch on rotation of said rod, and a lock for said rod to hold the lug in said notch.
