To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ELMER F. "WinBoLDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Duplex-Cashiers Desks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to desks intended for cashiers use especially under circumstances where different cashiers are to use the same desk at different periods of the day.

It will be understood that in busy mercantile establishments and like places where a cashier must attend steadily at the cashiers desk, it becomes necessary from time to time to relieve one cashier and put another in his or her place. It is not desirable to mix the accounts of the two cashiers as this would `virtuallymake one sponsor for the accounts of the other and yet it is usually inconvenient, if not, impractical, to provide two separate desks.

The object of my invention is to provide a construction such that a single desk may be utilized by two different cashiers and yet keep the papers and cash handled by the respective cashiers separate.

In my desk there is a separate drawer and a separate cabinet compartment for each cashier and the drawer and compartment of one cashier maybe locked without interfering with the drawer or compartment belonging to the other cashier. Furthermore, in my desk the lockingof one compartment of the cabinet automatically locks the corresponding drawer. The compartment of `one cashier is locked up so long as the drawer and compartment of the other cashier is open.

In connect-ion withthese general objects it is my purpose to providecertain details of construction rendering the desk convenient, compact 'and safe, said details` being hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

I accomplish my objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a desk embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan section on the line f3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan section on the line lid- 4f of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an isometric perspective of the preferred form of cash till.y Fig.- 6 is a sectional detail of the drawer-locking` device, the section being taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Fig. G.

Referring to the drawings, the top l of the desk has mounted thereon a duplex cabinet comprising the back 2, side walls 3 and f1, central partition 5, top G and door 7. Said partition divides the cabinet into two compartment-s a and I) and the door 7 is hinged at the front of partition 5 in such manner that when the door is closed in one position it will leave compartment a closed and compartment b open (as in Fig. 3), `and when swung to `closed position in front of compartment Z), it will close compartment 7) and open compartment Compartments a and I) are designed for the filing of sales slips or other papers which the cashiers are required to handle pursuant to their duties, and while the filing devices may be varied, I show them in the form of spindles a. and 7). The spindles a are secured to the back 2 in compartment a and to that side of door 7 which faces compartment a. Similarly the spindles b are some of them mounted upon the wall 2 in compartment 7) and others upon that side of the door 7 which faces compartment 7). In consequence when the door is closed as in Fig. 3 all`th`e spindles a will be inclosed and all of the spindles 7) will be exposed and accessible. p

The body of the desk below top 1 embraces back 10 and sides l1 and 12. Within the body of the desk are horizontal guides 13 for supporting the cash drawers A and B. These drawers are arranged side by` side. the drawer A occupying the space be neath the cabinet a and the drawer B occumring4 the space beneath the cabinet 7i.` By preference these drawers are each vprovided with guides 15 for supporting` cash tills 16 (see Figs. 2 and 5l.

The desk is provided with a drawer-lock which in the form selected to illustrate `tbe invention consists of a rod 18 secured to the bottom of door 7 bv a plate 19 or other suitable fastening device, Said rod is concentric' with `the axis of rotation of the door and extends down between the cash drawers A. and B as bestvshown in Figs. 4, 6 and 7. bottom of the drawers in such manner as to engage either the stop 22 extending down from the bottom of drawer A or the stop 23 extending down from the bottom of drawer B. Locking arm 2O extends in the same direction from the axis as does the door 7 and hence said arm will always lock the door 'beneath the closed compartment of the cabinet above. ln other words when compartment i is closed, fthe drawer A will be locked while4 compartment o will be .open `and the drawer B unlocked.

A duplex cashiers desk consisting of .a top and a suitable support therefor, said desk having an open front cabinet mounted upon ,the top -ofthe desk, a vertically arranged partition dividing the cabinet into two substantially equal compartments, a swinging door hinged at the `front of said partition and adapted to close one .or the other of said compartments, drawers slidingly mounted in the .desk beneath the top thereof, stops on said drawers, a locking rod fastened to and rotatable with the door, said rod being located between said drawers and a horizontal locking arm rigid with said rod and adapted to engage the stop upon one vor the other of said drawers;

A. cashiers desk having two drawers, a rotatable lockingrod adapted to Aengage one or the other of said drawers to lock the same, a cabinet7 a partition dividing said cabinet into two compartments, a swinging door hinged at the front of said partition and adapted to close one or the other of said compartments, said door and said looking rod being rigidly secured together, whereby the rod may be operated by the door, and two locks, one for looking the door in one closed position and the other for lookin@ the door in the other closed position.
