Description

, UNITED STATES VPATENT OFFICE.
D. K. ALBRIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND L.` H. DE LANGE, 0F BORDENTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT :N Devices Fon verw-infirme HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50.999. dated November 2l, 1865.
Toall 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, .D. K. ALBRIGHT, of
.Phil-adelphia, Pennsylvania, and L. H. `DE
ted States were granted to us on the 13thv day ot' J une, 1865 and our invention consists in the combination, with abat enlarged near the brim, ot' a series of blocks or projections arranged within the enlarged portion of the hat-so that the head of the'wearer will be mains tained free fro1n'-eontact with the side of the enlargement, thus leaving-a space between the latter and the head through which the air can circulatefrecly.
In order to enable .others skilled in the nrt to make our invention'we lwill now proceed to describe the manner ot' carryingl the same into effect.
0n reference to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification, Figure lis asection of our improved hat, and Fig.v2, an inverted plan view.' A is the body of thehat, and Bist-he brim, the lower portion ofthe body between lthe point a: and the point where it'meets the brim, 'iucreasing in diameter S'o'as toform an enlarge-1 ment ot;` the character show-n n'theidrawings.
, To the inner side of this enlargement arese- *cured blocksor sections D, of *felt or otherv suitable material, .theisaid blocks being ar- 4, ranged at intervals withinthe enlargement, as shown in'Fig. 2. y When the hat is placed upon lthe head of the wearer only the sides of the blocks-Dwi1l bear against thesame, so thatthe air maypss freely, between .the blocks 'into the enh. gement() and into the .body ofthe hat labove the head such a constant circulation of fresh air being thus maintained as will prevent the head from being uncomfortably heated.
It will be apparent that a hatpof this chary acter may be manufactured atless cost' than th'osc in which corrugated vbands and similar expensive and but partially elcient devices are used, and it will also be seen that a hat so constructed' is far superior to those referred to'. inasmuch as the a'ir is. admitted in much larger quantities, and can circulate with greater freedom over the head of thewearer and between the latter andf the hat.. It willalso be seen that by thisarrangement of the blocks within the enlargement the hat will accommodate itself readily to the form of the head` Although we have described blocks D of felt or other similar material as being u sed, the same result will be obtained by bending thin metal plates Dto the form shown' in Fig.`2
and securing them within the enlargement in the sam'e position as the blocks. We donot wish to confine ourselves, however, to either the plates or blocks,as projections of any suitable material bearing against the head s'o as to form a space between the latterand the inner side of the enlargement may be used.
lf desirable, also, a sweat-band X may he secured to the inner ysides of the blocks orprojectionsD.
We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a hat enlarged near tue brim, of a series of blocks or projections D, arranged within the enlarged portion of the hat, substantially as described, tor the purpose speqiell.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to thiS;8.Pecitcation in the presence ot' two 'subscribing witnesses.
