WILLIAM ROGERS, OF YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND O. S. PAlNE, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 90,197, dated Mag 18, 1869.
IMPROVED HEATING-SHOE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom itma/y concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Rocnas, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heatlog-Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful device for keeping the feet of invalids and others warm, more especially designed to be used by patients in sick-room and hospitals; and
The invention consists in making a boot, shoe, or sock of any suitable material, as felt or woollen fabric, with a pocket or compartment in its under side or beneath the foot when the shoe is worn, in which pocket or compartment may be placed any heat-retaining ma telial, as stone, wood, metal, or composition in the form of a block or blocks, or any heated substance, as salt or bran, or any heated liquid, the pocket or compartment, in the latter case, being made of rubber or water-tight, with a tight stopper thereto, or the liquid may be contained in a metallic or glass vessel, which may be used instead of the block, as first stated, in which case an India-rubber or water-tight compartment would not be required.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 represents a shoe or boot with the pocket or compartment beneath its bottom containing a block of any suitable description.
Figure 2 represents a shoe with a compartment made of rubber, (or water-tight,) the figures being broken away so as to show both methods.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the compartment in fig. 1, which contains the block B.
0 represents the water-tight compartment in fig. 2.
D is the aperture through which the liquid may be introduced, which aperture should be tightly corked when the shoe is in use.
The block B may be introduced in any convenient manner, either at the toe or heelend, the orifice being provided with lacing-strings for tightly closing it when the shoe is in use.
The heated substance is protected by felting or similar material, so that the heat will be retained for many hours but the heating-medium, whether liquid or solid, may be renewed as often as may be required.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, as a new manufacture v A shoe, boot, or sock, provided with a pocket or compartment for containing any heating-material or substance, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described. I
The above specification of my invention, signed by me, this 5th day of February, 1869.
WILLIAM ROGERS.
