Description

B. S. WIBSENFELD. W'AISTBAND FASTENBR.
No. 509,709 Patented Nov. 28, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. "WIESENFELD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO FERDINAND BERNEI, OF SAME PLACE.
WAISTBAN D-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,709, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed March 6, 1893. Serial No. 164.808. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT S. WIEsENEELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waistband-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to waistbandfasteners designed for use on the waistband of pantaloons, which is subject to great strain. Fasteners for this purpose, as heretofore constructed, have been so insecurely attached to the fabric, as by prongs or by a few strands of thread, that they frequently pull out to the great annoyance of the wearer of the garment. It is my purpose to provide a waistband-fastener which can be so securely attached to the fabric that it will be next to impossible to tear it off.
The invention will be hereinafter fully disclosed in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification-Figure 1 represents the upper part of a pair of pantaloons provided with my improved waistband-fastener; Fig. 2 atop plan View of the hasp part of the device detached; Fig. 3 a transverse section through the hasp and a waistband; Fig. 4 a top plan view of the hook and its plate detached; Fig. 5 a top plan View showing the hasp attached to a waist-band; Fig. 6 a like View of the hook, and Fig. 7 a transverse section through the hook and a waistband.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the hook part of my fastener and comprises a hook at integral with the base-plate b, is cut out of the sheet metal and bent up above the plane of the base-plate, as shown. The base-plate is preferably made rectangular and is provided with slots 0 0 near the edge of its sides, and with slots 01 d in its ends. These latter slots may be in duplicate, as at the edges opposite the ends of the slots 0 c, or there may be only the centre slot used at each end, or the three may be used. The slots may be cut in the plate at the same time the hook (tlS cut.
B, indicates the hasp part of the fastener, and it comprises a hasp 6 above the plane of the base-platef, with which hasp the hook a engages when in use. This plate is also preferably made rec angular and is provided 5 with one or more longitudinal slots 9 g on each side of the hasp and with one or more, transverse slots h in the ends ofthe plate; all of which slots are cut in the plate by a suitable stamp.
To secure the hook and the hasp to the waistband, a piece of fabric 11 is run through the longitudinal slots and a piece or pieces of fabric is run through the transverse slots. The plate is then placed upon the canvass l and stitched thereto, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 5 and 6. The outer piece of fabric m and the lining 'n are then applied in the usual manner, the former having a slot cut in it to pass over the loop a, and is subse- 7o quently sewed together to close said slot. By this construction the two parts of the fastener are so securely attached to the fabric that they resist the greatest strain brought to bear upon them without being torn 06.
It is obvious that the fastener may be used on other garments than pantaloons, and I do not therefore limit its application to any especial use.
Having thus fully described my invention, 80 what I claim is- A garment-fastener, consisting of a hook and a hasp, each having a base-plate, provided with longitudinal slots on the sides and transverse slots on the ends.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBT. S. VVIESENFELD.
