SPITTOON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,555, dated November 28, 1893.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, ALBERT PUSEL, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at the city of Munich, Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to spittoons for the use of consumptive patients, whose sputum it is well-known, if permitted to dry, causes infection, the object of the invention being to provide means for automatically flushing thesputum into a suitable collecting-box.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts: Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross section of my improved spittoon, on line m-zr: Fig. 2 and. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on line y L Fig. 1.

The device consists mainly of a metallic or wooden box A which is divided into two compartments by means of the inclined longitudinal slide a. This slide may be made concave or grooved as shown in Fig. 2, and is cut out at the lower end I) so as to form an opening toward the lower compartment of the box. The upper compartment of the box A contains an inner box or reservoir 01 open at the top, and provided with a cross-bar e, by which it can be lifted out, and at the bottom and toward the front with one or more valves f. The reservoir is kept filled with water, being replenished through the opening h in the cover, and the spittoon may if desired be embedded in the window sill of the room in which it is placed so as to be kept filled by falling rain, in which case the opening it should he in the portion of the spittoon projecting outside the window, instead of in the cover. The valves f are lifted by the inclined lugs g formed on the slide a, as the said slide is withdrawn and re-inserted. The apparatus is used by drawing out the slide a then spitting on the same, and replacingit. The valves fare thus opened twice, first when the slide is drawn out and again as it is being returned to its original position. The water flowing through the valve openings into the cavity or groove of the slide, moistens the said slide, and prevents the sputum from adhering thereto, and as the slide is replaced, the water again flows through the valves flushing the sputum by way of the aperture 1) into the lower compartment of the spittoon, which latter compartment is periodically emptied and cleaned.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A spittoon consisting of a box A,divided into a lower compartment and an upper compartment, in which is placed a reservoir 01 provided with valves f, and the inclined slide at, having the lugs g which are adapted to operate the valves f substantially as shown and described.

2. A spittoon consisting of a box A, divided into a lower compartment and an upper compartment, in which is placed a reservoir 01 having cross bar 6 and valves f the inclined concave slide at having openings b and lugs 9 adapted to operate the valves f substantially as shown and described.
