Beit known that I, EDWARD ROSS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of'New York, have invented a new and Improved Fan, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to that class of fans having a folding web adapted toppen in circular form.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fan, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to be conveniently opened or closed and securely locked in either position.

The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had tO the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a front perspective view of the improvement with the web folded in the recessed handle. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a face view of the improvement with parts in section and the web extended; and Fig. 4. is an enlarged crosssection of the improvement on the line 4-4 Vof Fig. 1.

The improved fan is provided with a web A folded in the usual manner and connected with a pin B held in the outer end of thehead C formed on the handle D. The head C is provided with a longitudinally-extending recess C in which passes the web A when in a folded condition, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. One outer fold A" of Ithe web A is secured to one of the walls of the recess C preferably the back wall, as illustrated in Fig. 4, while the other fold A2 is fastened to one face of a locking bar E adapted to close the opening of the recess C at the time the web A is folded therein, and adapted to swing the web into an extended y circular position, as illustrated in Fig. 3, to fit into a groove O2 arranged on the back of the head C, as plainly shown in Fig. 3. When the locking bar E is over the opening ofk the recess C then it is adapted tobe locked in place in this position by a suitable catch F held on the head C, and

the said bar is also adapted to be locked in place when in the other position in the groove C2 by a catch F located opposite the catch F and likewise on the head C. The groove C2 is sufficiently deep to permit the entrance of the bar E to'prevent the same from projecting beyond the sides of the head C, the said bar being in a similar positionwhen over the opening of the recess C', so that in neither position does the bar project beyond the sides of the head.

As illustrated in Figs. l and 3, the bar E is made somewhat longer than the fold A2 to permit of an opening or other arrangement for the catches F and F and also to form a curved or bent end E adapted to be taken hold of by the operator when moving the bar from one position to the other in opening and closing the web A. It will be seen that by this construction the handle D is made solid and not made in two parts, asis the case in fans of this class as heretofore constructed.

Consequently the fan has a neater appearance and its web can be easier opened or 'closed without changing the grip on the handle D. I do not limit myself to any special construction of catch or the material of which the handle, its head C, and the bar E are made.

The handle D, as well as the har E, can be made of celluloid or other composition, aluminium or other metal, wood, leather, paper, cloth, pasteboard, or other suitable material, and the folding web canbe manufactured of paper, cloth, silk or other suitable material capable of folding for theY purpose described.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and 'desire to secure' by Letters Patent Y 1.- A fan of the class described,l comprising a recessed handle carrying a pin at its Outer IOO having a longitudinal recess, a pin carried in the outer end of the said head, a folding web engaging the said pin and adapted to fold in the said recess, one outer fold of the said web being attached to one of the Walls of the said recess, and a locking bar attached to the other outer fold of the said Web, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a fan of the class described, the cornbination with a handle provided with a head having a longitudinal recess, a pin carried in the outer end of the said head, a folding Web as set forth.
