EDIVARD A. SMITH, OF MIDDLETOWVN, CONNECTICUT.
HOOK FOR TYPE -VVRITER COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,350, dated August 5, 1902.
Application filed March 3, 1902.
To CLZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Safety-Hooks for Type WVriter Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hooks for type-writer covers; and the main object of myimprovement is to provide means to prevent the hook from accidentally unfastening.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of oneof myhooks, together with a broken portion of the type-writer cover to which the said hook is secured, a portion of the type-writer base, and oneof the screwkeepers for the said hook to engage Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the broken line a Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view of the same. Fig. at is a detached end view of the hook and latch as mounted on their rivet ready for being secured to the typewriter cover, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same. I
A designates a portion of a wooden base for any ordinary type-writer, and B a portion of the case or cover. The base is provided with as many screw-keepers 6 as there are hooks 7 on the cover, the said keepers being screwed into the edge of the base, with their heads projecting for the hooks to engage for securing the cover to the base, so that the machine may be carried by means of a handle on the cover, all in a well-known manner.
In order to prevent the hooks fromaccidentally unfastening, and thus makeit safe to thus carry the type-writer, I provide each hook With a spring-latch 8, having a lip 9 arranged to engage the screw-keeper by its slot, and thus lock the hook against accidental unfastening. The hook 7 is in the main of the ordinary form; but I provide it with two side lugs 10 and 11 to assist in confining the spring-latch in. position on the hook. The spring-latch, like the hook, is provided with an eye at its pivotal end, so that the hook and the spring-latch can both be secured to the cover B by means of a single rivet or axis 12 Serial Ito-196,458. (No model.)
with any desired washers 13 and 14. The open book is thus secured to the side of the cover on an axis that extends transversely to the broad sides of the said hook and so as to swing in a plane parallel to the side upon which itis thus secured, and the screw-keeper is parallel to the axis of the hook, so that the hook approaches the side of the keeper for being engaged therewith. The body of'the spring-latch liesin between the lugs 10 11. Its swinging end is provided with the lock ing-lip 9, turned down from one edge and with the edge of the said lip slanting backwardly from its outer end. The other side of the spring-latch is provided with a turnedup or beveled Wing 15 for a thumb-piece to lift the latch out of engagement with the head of the screw-keeper 6 and to facilitate proper and easy engagement of the spring-latch with the said head as the hook is forced into place over the body of the keeper.
It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosedmay be made, and therefore I do not Wish tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown'and described, but desire the liberty tomake such changes in working my inventionas may fairly come within the spirit and scope of'the same.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a keeper in the form of a headed screw-body with an open hook mounted on an axis that extends transversely to the broad side of the said hook and parallel to the said keeper, for presenting the mouth of the hook to the side of the said keeper, and a separately-formed spring-latch having a pivotal eyeuby which it is mounted on the same axis as the said hook for locking the hook to said keeper, substantially as described.
2. A type-Writer cover having swinging fastening-hooks mounted to swing in a plane parallel to the sides of the said cover to which the said hooks are secured, and spring-latches each latch having a pivotal eye by which it is mounted on the broad side of the said hooks for locking the said hooks intoengagement with their keeper, substantially as described.
3. A hook having lugsoneaohsideof its body in combination with a spring-latch pivoted on the axis of the said hook, and with its body between the said lugs to hold the engaging ends of the said hook and latch in unison, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a hook for engaging a screw-like keeper having a head provided with a driving-slot with a spring-latch swinging with the said hook, and having the locking-lip adapted to engage the driving-slot in the endof the head of the said keeper, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a hook for engaging a screw-like keeper with a spring-latch swinging with the said hook and having the longi-
